UMass-bound Michael Andreassi and Sachem North hope to beat West Islip for the second straight year.

The Suffolk County championships won’t be played for another month and a half.

But if you look at today’s schedule, you may get the idea that the calendar has somehow fast-forwarded.

Consider these matchups set for today:

* Ward Melville at Smithtown West

* Sachem North at West Islip

As if that’s not enough, there are a couple of more marquee matchups in Section 11:

* Whitman at Connetquot

* Northport vs. East Islip

We should know a lot more about what we can expect to see in late May after today.

Of course, of special interest is West Islip-Sachem North. Let’s not forget, SN beat WI in overtime to open the season last year. It was the Lions’ only loss in what proved to be their fourth state championship season in the last five years.

In Section 1, there are several interesting games as well. Defending Class A sectional champ Lakeland/Panas, off to a 2-0 start but having been tested in both games, plays at Arlington. Somers and Rye, teams that have played tight games while splitting the last two years, meet today in a game that has more meaning because of the Garnets’ move up to Class B.

Elsewhere, Byram Hills battles Fox Lane in a battle of standout goalies — Andrew Larrabee for the Bobcats and Cameron Stephens for the Fox Lane — and first-year varsity program Dobbs Ferry plays neighboring rival Irvington for the first time in a newfound lax rivalry that should grow as the years pass.

In the CHSAA, rivals Iona Prep at Archbishop Stepinac renew acquaintances and St. Anthony’s, which fell to Chaminade, hosts a Holy Trinity team that beat Farmingdale.

In Connecticut, 2010 FCIAC champ Greenwich and New Canaan meet at 7 p.m. at New Canaan’s Dunning Stadium in a rematch of last year’s FCIAC title game, won by the Cardinals 5-4.

Both teams are coming off rough losses. Greenwich lost at home to Darien 13-6 and New Canaan traveled to Northern Westchester and fell to Somers 15-11 after leading 11-3 in the third quarter.

Brien McMahon, off to a 2-0 start, plays Class S state finalist St. Joseph’s-Trumbull.

Traditional power Wilton, regarded as among the top contenders in the FCIAC this season, could be in for a battle when it plays upstart Joel Barlow off the Black Rock Turnpike in Redding.

Looking for another interesting matchup in Connecticut? How about Staples taking on host Ridgefield at Tiger Hollow Stadium at 6 p.m. That was easy. After all, both teams are 2-0, and, if you recall, Staples stunned Ridgefield, the 2009 FCIAC champs, to start last season by winning a wild and crazy, 11-10 overtime affair.

As always, be sure to post score game info/scores on this thread. Or, if it’s quicker and easier for you, send your updates to info@laxlessons.com.

  1. LI Lax says:

Predictions for the four big Suffolk games:

    Sachem North 11, WI 9
    WM 9, Smithtown West 6
    EI 14, Northport 12
    Connetquot 9, Whitman 5

  2. upstate says:

Sachem has some swagger right now. We haven’t really heard from them since Chris and then Corey Harned were on the team and they were one of the top teams in the state in the mid 1990’s.

    • Lax Novice says:

When did those guys move there from Hicksville?

      • slacrosse says:

Dont know about those guys but do know that Brandon Gamblin (U. Mass) transferred there this yr. from Hicksville. I thought BG was THE beast among many beasts on last yrs LI team who won the Gold Medal in the Empire State Games.

But to show the depth of NYS lax, actually the “Central” team beat LI in the round-robin comp. and then LI came back to beat Central in the Final (think both games were 1 goal).

      • upstate says:

You know, I am not sure. I know Sachem went to three state title games and won it all in 1993. chris went to hopkins andnow coaches on the island, i think anyway. corey went to hopkins too, but I don’t know where he is at now. I am no family friend or anything like that. just a casual observer with a decent memory.

      • LI Lax says:

Gamblins moved during the fall. Crossans moved over the summer from SWR.

        • slacrosse says:

I guess it’s pretty rare for these transfers? Not that easy for a kid to leave behind friends, etc for his last yr of high school, let alonf the family maybe having to move?

Out in Suffolk do the families actually have to live in the district for a kid to play (as is the case in Section 1) or can they just “tuition-in” and not have to move.

Not certain but think in Section 1 that if you are allowed to just tuition-in, may have to sit out a yr.

          • Lax Novice says:

It’s pretty rare going from one public school district to another, literally uprooting the family unless there’s something else like a job switch for Mom or Dad, which is why the Gamblin move was discussed so much. Much more common are moves from public to parochial to boarding school and vice versa where the family doesn’t change addresses. If Ed DiDomenico was at Rye instead of Brunswick, e.g., that’d change those teams’ prospects some. I’m pretty sure that the people who oversee NYS public school sports have stringent rules against recruiting within school districts. What’s lost is that Sachem beat West Islip and Nick Galasso without these transfers, be interested to see what happens this year. WI is still pretty strong.

          • slacrosse says:

Yes, Rye does lose kids to Bwick, IP, FP and boarding schools. Assume Greenwich, NC and Darien lose kids to Bwick and boarding schools.

By the way I felt Gamblin was THE “beast” among many beasts on the “LI” Empire State team. But to show the depth of NYS lax, the “Central” team actually beat LI in the round robin games with LI coming back to beat Central in the Final Gold Medal game (think both games were 1 goal margins)

          • Big Easy says:

“Tuition in” does not apply to public schools in Section 1…thus they are public schools. Exception could be if the parent is a teacher in the district, some districts will allow their children to attend the employing school district schools. Who wouldn’t “tuition in” to a Yorktown or JJ in Section 1 if given the chance?

          • Stickhead says:

Huh? Big Easy–“tuitioning in” has academic and social ramifications and “given the chance” many would still NOT opt for it…the Q is are Y and JJ better better academically or socially for your kid…decisions like these are not/should not based on lax alone. In rare instances, it might make sense for a truly exceptional player to try and gain exposure by “tuitioning in” to these programs if they were allowed, but I would think/hope that it is the rare exception.

          • Big Easy says:

Stickhead…follow the conversation above…I agree with you 110 percent…I was referring to the idea that the kids from Sachem moved for a reason….in that case it seems it was a job change. I am not saying that academics and social factors are less important than lacrosse. I would also agree that for the exceptional player it might be worth considering if they are “alone” on a poor team.

          • slacrosse says:

Dont know if Rye allows this now (too crowded) but I know that “tuitioning in” to Rye has certainly been done in the past–not just limited to private schools.

But aside from cost, uprooting a kid even to join a strong lax program has got to be a major decision for a family and one not taken lightly, to say the least.

          • TB Toad says:

JJ(Katonah-Lewisboro) doesn’t allow High School transfers. If they did the tuition was quoted to be $35,000/yr. Ergo, off to boarding school if your hometown program is not top rated.

  3. Hooper says:

Greenwich should take care of NC again.

  4. LI Lax says:

Sachem North 1, WI 1 in the first

  5. Joe Lombardi says:

Somers leads Rye 4-2 at the half. There’s a lightning delay.

  6. laxerrr says:

    FL vs Byram score?

    • Quakers says:

Very solid defenses on both sides as the score was tied 0-0 at half. Byram took control with 5 straight goals and ended with a 6-1 win. Impressed with both defenses/goalies.

  7. 914 says:

byram won 6-1. the game was tied at half 0-0, but just as we have seen as soon as byram scores they can shift the momentum totally. well played for the bobcats

  8. CT Lax says:

    Brien McMahon 9, St. Joe’s 7

    Darien 21, Danbury 2

  9. wildcat says:

    Lp 14-3 over Arlington

    • GreenBear says:

      What happened to Arlington?

      • Arlington Fan says:

LP was up 4-3 with less than a minute to go in the first half and Lakeland scored 2 quick goals to go up 6-3 at the half. The game was very competitive in the first half but not so much in the second.

  10. Jericho says:

WI final was 12-9 over Sachem North…

Ward Melville leading Smithtown West 9-8 with time winding down

  11. ChesterLax says:

West Islip beats Sachem North 12-9. anyone have a Melville/Smith W score?

  12. Traditions says:

    Some other scores…

    Connetquot 16, Whitman 8

    East Islip 11, Northport 8

    St. Anthony’s 11, Holy Trinity 4

    Syosset 13, Calhoun 7

Smithtown East 13, HHH East 8

    St. Mary’s 12, St. Francis Prep 8

  13. Gael Wins says:

    Iona 15, Stepinac 2

  14. LI Guy says:

Ward Melville-Smithtown West suspended with 6:03 left in 4th qtr bc of lightning and WM leading 9-8.

They will pick game up at this point tomorrow at 4:30 tomorrow at West…

  15. slacrosse says:

Congrats to Somers on their 7-5 win over Rye.

Rye made way, way too many unforced errors in all phases of the game giving Somers a ton of unnecessary added possession. To Somers credit they capitalized for scores in some of these cases as well as a few instances of beating the D in set play. Somers goalie made some nice saves as well.

Bright spots for Rye were its soph goalie making numbers of solid saves and on FO’s where Rye had a strong advantage.
    t
I’ll take the “glass is half full”(vs half empty) approach for now: If Rye can make so many unforced errors and still come within 2 goals of a strong Somers team, they should start winning some tough ones IF they can cut down on these errors.

Surprisingly, Briggs Barton, Rye’s leading scorer was not dressed for the game for unspecified reasons. Hopefully, Rye’s third starting senior middie who hasn’t played yet will be back in the next week.

  16. BigBadBear says:

Didn’t see the game, but I am a surprised ‘Cuse loses to Cornell..looking past the Big Red to ND? or, were they living on the edge too long, with a lack of middie depth, and in particular, dodgers/playmakers to set up their big guns inside…Keough gets shut off by short stick, held scoreless and they lose…to me, he needs to get touches all the time for them to be successfull…
oner last thought, I think Pannell the Tewartton (sp) winner…not the biggest kid, but huge heart total gamer

    • South of 287 says:

Cuse never looks past big red – upstate bragging rights on that one. Hopefully they beat comers who need to upgrade their schedule next year

    • Big Red Lax says:

Keough is more finisher than X man. Not a great dodger, but amazing shooter. Pannell is a beast and with Cornell healthy now, Big Red can possibly win out as toughest games are behind them.

What happened to JoJo? Not filling the cage as predicted…

      • BigBadBear says:

I think they are messing with his role a bit too much…I do think Desko trying to protect his players, wiatinhg for the big dance

  17. South of 287 says:

Sure Rye is playing tough slate and has injuries, blah, blah, blah. Reality is in prior years they were mentally tough and wouldn’t play sloppy knowing margin for error was small against top flight talent. This team needs to buckle down or it could get ugly.

  18. P&G says:

Sears, want to discuss Rye’s problems/issues – fair game. Please bring something of value – or move on.

  19. Hills says:

congrats boyz on nice start as Byram moves to 5-1 with consecutive road wins over Greeley, Brewster and Fox Lane…Rye game after break will be strong test…go Bobcats…Bxville and PV are not the only C teams out there.

  20. BigBadBear says:

if Rye was missing Barton, big difference for Rye,,,I only saw a scrimmage, but he immediately draws slides and opens up the inside…has a big shot from the outside too

    • slacrosse says:

Hear whatever happened to him only involves that one game. Sure would have helped but as I said the kids really need to stop/limit unnecessarily turn-overs!!

  21. BigBadBear says:

speaking of injuries..Lade, Desko and Mcgill all out for ‘cuse…that’s not good
