Senior middie Michael Hirson controls against Eastchester during the Raiders’ 9-6 win yesterday.

Connecticut joined the rest of the region in starting its season yesterday.

Six-time defending Class M state champ Darien easily handled 2010 Class S finalist and 2009 Class S champ St. Joseph’s-Trumbull 18-4.

Third-year coach Roy Colsey’s Ridgefield team, which won the 2009 FCIAC crown, won a nailbiter in Northern Westchester, beating 2009 Section 1 Class B champ Somers 9-8.

It’s also been quite an opening week for a pair of upstart Section 1 Class C programs.

Bronxville beat Fox Lane and Mamaroneck back-to-back and sophomore Jack Grass was named LaxMagazine.com’s Northeast Region player of the week. (You can check out the article by clicking here.)

Pelham, meanwhile, is also 2-0 with its most recent win coming against White Plains.

OK, OK.

Enough talk about the nation’s No. 1 hotbed for lax, the Hudson Valley/Long Island/Connecticut region.

As we all know, lax has been spreading like wildfire — from sea to shining to sea.

That growth will be on full display today as San Ramon Valley from Cali, whose coach, Garden City grad Barry Lindsey, visits the Trojans at 4:15 p.m.

SRV is off to a 6-0 start and regarded as one of the best squads on the West Coast. How will they fare against a GC team that last year reached the state finals and started this year ranked by some outlets as the top team in the tristate area?

It will be one of the more interesting storylines today. Among the others: Nassau rivals Bethpage and South Side square off as do Central Westchester County neighbors Pleasantville and Briarcliff.

Also in Section 1, Yorktown grad Donny Connolly and his Arlington team hope to play their fourth straight close game against an established power when the Admirals visit the Huskers at Charlie Murphy Field at 4:30 p.m.

As if that’s not enough, what will eventually be one of Section 1’s top rivalries in lax starts today as first-year varsity program Carmel visits Mahopac.

Also of note, Rye and Iona Prep, both coming off tough losses, square off in what has been an interesting series to watch the last couple of years, and Fordham Prep, fresh off the huge win over Iona, faces another rival in Archbishop Stepinac.

Here’s what’s on the schedule:

San Ramon (Calif.) at Garden City, 4:15 p.m.
South Side at Bethpage, 4:30 p.m.
St. John the Baptist at St. Anthony’s, 4:30 p.m.
St. Mary’s at Kellenberg, 4:30 p.m.
Fordham Prep at Stepinac, 4:30 p.m.
Kennedy Catholic at Wappingers, 4:30 p.m.
Shoreham-Wading River at Bayport-Blue Point, 4:30 p.m.
Croton-Harmon at Sleepy Hollow, 4:30 p.m.
Ossining at Westlake, 4:30 p.m.
Keio at Blind Brook, 4:30 p.m.
Pleasantville at Briarcliff, 4:30 p.m.
Fox Lane at Harrison, 4:30 p.m.
Byram Hills at Greeley, 4:30 p.m.
Arlington at Yorktown, 4:30 p.m.
Carmel at Mahopac, 4:30 p.m.
North Salem at Hen Hud, 4:30 p.m.
Highland at Clarkstown North, 4:45 p.m.
Rye at Iona Prep, 4:45 p.m.
Staples at Norwalk at Testa Field, 7 p.m.

  1. upstate says:

I think the most interesting game (not the best game by any stretch) will be Kennedy vs. wappingers. I think Kennedy has made some strides and this willbe abig game for them. Maybe they can pull off another victory.

  2. WestLax says:

Rye vs. Iona preview; Rye and Iona both come off tough losses Tuesday. The teams will be evenly matched and it could come down to goal tending, both teams playing sophomores. Rye defense should be able to contain the Iona attackman. Rye’s trouble will be at the D midfield Rye will have to do better on their slides. Rye ‘s attack must be more balanced they cannot rely on just one player. Should be a 1 goal game either way. See match ups:

    Pickup vs. Borselino
    Collins vs. Castellano
    Bonsal vs. Trizano

Rye’s attack (Barton, O’Callahan and Stern) vs. Iona’s inexperienced “D”

THE Savs coached a few of the Wappingers kids on Renegades and now are going to play summer lax with them on the Westchester Warriors.

    Wappingers 9- 5

    • Old Rugger says:

Kennedy’s leading scorer Wilson out with concussion from Pearl River game. While they are improved I don’t have the depth/ stick skills needed to beat Wappingers yet. Wappingers 10-4

      • Just in says:

Go Kennedy monumental win for the program. Savs great job. A class act for the wappinger warriors. Nicely coach’d group of kids very different offense than last year.

    • LAX says:

Last years head coach scott snyder and assistant perry salvio have always been around vin savastano when they play football and lacrosse at brewster when vin was an assistant back in the day. snyder & salvio had encouraged his kids to play last summer on the savastano’s summer team. Both are new and growing programs and any influence on the kids like the savs can only be positive.

  4. Paclaxfan says:

I like Pac big, very physical game by both

  5. GreenBear says:

    Agreed…Pac should win real big!!!

    • Lax Guy says:

Hope the game is played cleanly, this is a rivalry in every sport boys or girls. Just worried that if the score gets beyond Carmels reach they may get frustrated. I do not see this game being close today but in the future will be one heated battle. Good luck to both teams, Ill take Pac 16-4

      • D-Pac says:

Hey Lax Guy. The game was played very cleanly by both teams. Much credit to Carmel for not losing their cool . Hope to see a great rivalry between both teams in the next few years.

        • Lax Guy says:

I agree, credit to Carmel for never letting the score get them down. If Carmel can get there youth program up and running they will be good in time. They always have good athletes.

  6. Lax Guy says:

Arlington will not be close to matching Yorktown today, I think Yorktown wins this easily by 6-8 goals. Too much talent for Arlington to match up with. Yorktown can generate offense from anywhere on the field. Ill say 14-6

  7. going to be a good day for someone says:

Keio or blind brook … someone is getting a win today.. good luck to these programs in their growth

  8. Indian J says:

    Town by 5

    Garden City by 7

    Pac by 12

    Wappingers by 1

    Rye by 3

    Bethpage by 4

  9. LI Lax says:

    GC up 7-1 after 1

  10. Joe Lombardi says:

Yorktown leads Arlington 3-1 after one. Joey Raniolo has two goals for the Huskers, according to Jim Stout from MaxPreps.com.

  11. Paclaxfan says:

Just got word – 2nd half starting now pac up 9-0

  12. LI Lax says:

12-6 GC with 3:11 to go in the third.

  13. Paclaxfan says:

    14-1 pac final

  14. Gael Wins says:

Iona lead Rye 8-4 going in the fourth

  15. Joe Lombardi says:

Final: Fox Lane 13, Harrison 5

  16. Big Easy says:

What was the score of the Arlington vs Town score last year?

  17. justlaxin says:

    8-2
Last year was a little more competitive. This year was a sloppy game. Arlington looked decent. Town looked ok at the offensive end but stout on the D. Shooters were off for Town.

    • Bp says:

Last year final was 9-3, 4-2 at half. Game very competitive. 2 yrs ago was 21-1, 14-1 at half so some progress has been made. Yesterday skill and lax iQ too much to overcome. Town is very gd this yr and very balanced! Arlington I think was nervous and just didn’t play well……it’s high school lax. It happens. Congrats to town. Gd bunch of kids……..glad they are in b this year…….

  18. Big Easy says:

Thanks justlaxin. Final and insight on Iona-Rye anyone?

  19. P-Lax says:

    Pleasantville 7, Briarcliff 3

  20. Ram Tough says:

    CL North 13
    Highland 3

  21. LI Guy says:

    SWR 20, Bayport-BP 9
    South Side 9 Bethpage 3

    • SuffolkBLax says:

caught most of the SWR game @ Bayport, wow… they run the fastbreak better than a lot of college teams! very unselfish team, Bayport will be fine in class “C”….

  22. LAX says:

    Wappingers over Kennedy Catholic 12-7

  23. CatLax says:

    Byram 6, Greeley 4

    • lacrosse says:

Tough loss for Greeley. Gladstone had 2, Ekstrom had 1, and Rubin had 1. Gladstone was playing with a broken rib.

  24. 914 says:

didnt attend the game but from what i heard byram locked off gladstone. even with that i also heard that the kid has a rocket of a shot. good job of byram to keep him under control.

  25. maggy says:

who won the north salem v hen hud game

  26. lax says:

    is gladstone committed anywhere?

    • 914 says:

no i doubt it. he is really small and although he is quick, i dont think he puts up the numbers to be great at the next level, at least d-1. in my opinion he could be great at the d-III level, but thats just my opinion

  27. PureClassLax says:

    Fordham Prep 13-2 over Stepinac.

Stepinac was outclassed and Fordham handled them easily. Stepinac has a great coach in Adam Rubin, they are just missing the depth to take off this season. Hopefully some more recruits will walk through the door after the football teams 12-0 season.

  28. slacrosse says:

Congrats to IP in its 10-7 win over Rye. As expected IP moved the ball well on O and has some dangerous scorers which I expected.

Let’s say it was 9-7 as the last goal was an empty-netter in the last moments of the game as Rye’s goalie was doubling to get the ball back.

Sounds close but Rye was behind by 3-4 goals most of the game and then came back to the 9-7 score. For most of the game Rye’s play was sub-par with too much sloppy play on ground balls, passes, strips. D really needs to step it up(ball-watching, slides ). That’s alot of pressure put on the O giving up 9,10, goals a game. Some bright spots include more diverse scoring with Stern scoring 3 (Barton 3/Bonaventura 1) decent FO possession and goalie play.

Continue to believe that there’s solid upside in Rye’s play which will be tested next Tuesday vs. Somers.

    • laxman says:

since you were at both games and the scores of the two games were similar, who do you think looked better IP or Jay?

      • slacrosse says:

        May be a duplicate comment,

Based on just these two games would say Jay who has more weapons, particularly on D. Would say IP would rank in the group of top teams in Section 1.

  29. laxman says:

has L/P played any games yet? if so when’s their first?

  30. YanksJetsSJU says:

I believe L/P’s first game is 4:30 p.m. Friday, April 8 at Panas against Hen Hud.

  31. HV Fan says:

SH beat Croton 14-10…Croton has a very good freshman whos a lefty and really quick…SH plays Keio on Sat them received Pville on Tuesday afternoon
