The University of Pennsylvania men’s lacrosse team picked up its biggest win a while, upsetting defending national champion Duke 7-3 today at Franklin Field.

Several former Long Island standouts, including Manhasset product Drew Belinsky (two goals and one assist), Half Hollow Hills East grad Maxx Meyer (five ground balls) and Comsewogue product Al Kohart (one goal) were among Penn’s standouts.

Virginia, top-ranked in the coaches’ poll, picked up another one-goal win at Stony Brook, outlasting the No. 5  Seawolves 11-10 on a goal by Steele Stanwick.

UVa won despite not having the services of the twin brother tandem of former Huntington stars Rhamel and Shamel Bratton, who were suspended for the game for undisclosed violation of team rules.

Nice job LI guys and great win for Penn!

  2. slacrosse says:

Fitzgerald (Putnam Valley) had 2 G / 1A vs Yale. Came back to 9-8 with a few minutes left but Yale then took enough possessions to put it away at the end.

The most surprising game to me is Drexel beating Albany by 7. Anyone know anything about Drexel’s program? That is a big time win.

    • upstate says:

I looked up last year’s team. Drexel beat albany by 2. the year before they lost by two. That is some quick turn around. Any Dragons fans out there who can fill me in?

      • BigBadBear says:

dunno about that, Duke losing 7 -3 to Penn was prety surprizinf to me…

        • Lax Novice says:

Tough one today Bear, how’re you holding up?

          • BigBadBear says:

Doing well…and I know the score that everyone is waiting for..the Emory Eagles beat SCAD 11 – 8 yesterday, which may propel them into a national ranking…saw some of the MD game yesterday, they looked awesomne, but for the life of me, didn’t understand GT’s D against Catalino, please don’t slide off this guy..assumimg ‘cuse gets past Army, really looking forward to next week’s game against Va, which now has suspended 3 seniors in 2 weeks…

          • matt says:

yes BBB. but they’ll all play

      • matt says:

Last year, they were nationally ranked and were on the bubble of making the NCAA Tournament. Many people feel they should have made it. They were expected to be even better this year, but Kevin Stockel (John Jay ’07) tore his ACL this year and was redshirted. He was their best middie. They have two awesome attackmen in Robert Chuch and Scott Perri. They also have a very strong D, and Mark Manos, their goalie, is one of the best in the nation. They only lost to UVa by three I think in their season opener. Overall, they’re a very good team. Albany, on the other hand is rebuilding now with the Thompsons. Last year, they weren’t very good, and now they’re relying on freshmen, with the number 1 ranked senior coming in this year. Expect for them to get better soon, but not make too much noise this year. Nationally, they haven’t been of much relevance since Brett Queener had them undefeated for a while, and even reached the Final Four I think. Maybe a round earlier.

i had no idea that drexel was legit. pretty cool, thanks for the info.

New polls just came out today. Drexel’s 16 in the Coaches Poll, and 18 in the Media poll. Only 1 spot behind Duke, and above Army, Denver, Brown, and Yale in the rankings.

Very solid team. Considering 16 teams make the tourney, don’t be too surprised if they make it this year. Chris Bates is definitely doing a great job there, and they’re on the rise.

  4. D-Pac says:

Congrats to Drexel’s Trizano. Pac’s Foley waiting in the wings to be a part of a great program.

  5. upstate says:

so i had to look up drexel’s roster. they have a couple of yorktown kids, a jay kid, a few long island guys from smithtown, hauppauge, wantagh etc. they also have the kid Nick Trizano from iona prep. Not a bad roster at all…nice recruiting by the coach.

  6. laxxdogg says:

you think foley is good enough for drexel?

  7. upstate says:

teams like drexel are great options for all-section players or even AA players who don’t grab headlines like bocklet, marasco, rannigan etc. The team seems to be made up of blue collar players who can take care of business. it is exciting to see them rise up in the ranks.

  8. justlaxin says:

Upstate, what are you talking about? Those 3 you mentioned were some of the highest ranked recruits coming out of HS in the nation. Drexel is a great place for any kid. It is not at the top of the D1 hierarchy right now, but they can beat anybody on any given day. PA lacrosse is getting better and it is benefitting schools like Nova and Drexel. Nova is in the same boat as Drexel after beating them on Saturday.

    • laxman says:

your supporting this argument, aren’t you? He’s saying that those top college prospects all choose schools like UNC UVA ‘Cuse and a few others, while other hard working players that aren’t headlined in the inside lacrosse magazines are going to Drexel and competing just as well as those top prospects.

  9. Just sayin says:

Yeh Cuse… Galloway and Desko are sickkkk
