You could argue that there is no number more steeped in tradition in college sports than the No. 22 at Syracuse University’s lacrosse program.
Gary Gait wore it. Then the Powell brothers (Casey, Ryan and Mikey). Most recently, both Dan Hardy and Cody Jamieson.
Next season, it will be worn by former Somers two-time all-American JoJo Marasco. Marasco informed me this morning he has been issue No. 22 for the 2011 season.
Marasco had requested the number last season, his freshman year at the ‘Cuse, but was issued No. 1 instead. Cody Jamieson wore No. 22 last season, after Dan Hardy had worn the double-deuce jersey for four years.
Marasco enjoyed a standout freshman year with the Orange with 17 points in 10 games. Marasco, who missed the final five games of last season with an injury, ended his varsity career as Somers’ all-time leading scorer with 212 goals and 104 assists.
