Bronxville has two of the area’s top rising senior recruits in midfielders Charlie McCormick and Jack Near, who have committed to Georgetown and Notre Dame, respectively.

The Broncos now have another senior set to take his skills to the next level — defenseman Billy Casperson, who has committed to Hamilton College.

Here’s a Q&A with Billy on his commitment:

What were the main factors in making your choice?
Hamilton was on the top of my list from the beginning of my college search, starting back in November of last year. I had seen the campus at various times throughout the year and really could see myself being there. I thought Coach (Scott) Barnard was building something special and wanted to be a part of the first Hamilton men’s lacrosse team to compete in the NESCAC league.

What other schools were you considering and what schools did you visit?
I was considering Haverford and Tufts. I visited many schools though, such as Connecticut College, Middlebury and SUNY Geneseo.

What adjustments do you think you will need to make to play at the next level?
Think I’m going to have get used to the overall speed of the college game and the quickness of some attackmen. Coach Barnard stressed that if I work hard my freshman year, I could see the field often.

What are your strengths as a player and how would you describe your style of play?
I believe I am a good position defenseman with solid stick skills to clear the ball. I;m not the flashy type of player but I try my hardest on the field to make sure the opposing offense doesn get any opportunities to score.

What players have you looked up to as you have moved up through the varsity ranks?
At Bronxville, we have had a number of guys who have moved on to play at the next level. Throughout my sophomore and junior year, I tried to connect with guys like Chris Walsh (Wesleyan) and Joe Wood (Washington & Lee) to better understand what it takes to play Division III lacrosse. Those guys helped me to understand the recruiting process and what to expect in the future.

When did you first realize you had the potential to play at the college level?
In November of last year, I played for a fall team that traveled to many tournaments up and down the East Coast. It was at these tournaments that I started to receive emails and letters from schools saying they had seen me play.  After getting emails from some schools, I started to take my self-much more seriously as a potential Division III prospect.

Way to go Billy!! From the Bronxville Bulldog travel team – seems like years and years ago, but that was a fun summer.

  4. Bronco Bob says:

Congrats Billy. You worked hard to get there!

sorry I am new at this…what exactly does a commitment mean with D3 schools? Does that mean he is definitely on the team? I’ve heard different things, and someone I know that was “recruited” to a D3 team and is surprised that there are a whole lot of other recruits there trying out for a limited number of positions and he is not sure if he is going to make the team. Just trying to understand some of the verbage that is used. Do they actually sign something when they commit? Thanks for any insights!

In the world of D3, a “commitment” is simply a verbal agreement between player and coach that if the recruit is accepted by Admissions, he will be invited to try out for the team. Usually, if the conversation gets to this level, the coach has determined that the player is a prioroty for the program and will act as an advocate in the admissions process. Hope this is helpful.

Lax for life – good info. Appreciate you passing it along.

  8. Lax Bro says:

How is Bronxville’s defense this year? Is Casperson the best defensemen?

  9. reader4000 says:

Luke Dutton is also very strong and getting a lot of college looks. Their Goalies – Pass and Kimack – are well regarded as well

  10. lax says:

Wheres Dutton going? Where is he looking?

  11. hv lax says:

Bronxville should be pretty good this year, their defense is built of a lot of upperclassmen, although in regards to their best defenseman i would say it is frank von mehren, their long pole middie. Word was they had a top freshman pole, but he transferred, but rumor has it that the grass kid who made it in 8th grade is back at bronxville for 10th, if so, they are a team to watch in 2011

  12. Laxxxx says:

    Congrats bud.

  13. bxv lax says:

dutton could be a potential big d3 prospect but it seems as he is taking it too loosely…

  14. laxer says:

dutton is better than von mehren.

  15. laxer says:

    dutton is off to trinity

  16. SWLAX says:

Dutton and von Mehren play two different positions, one is a pole, the other a close defensemen, so it’s tough to say that one is better than the other.

  17. Bronx Bomber says:

This is very true both are very good players that can produce for bronxville.

  18. ‘Dusky says:

Not very surprised that he only lasted 1 year in college. Simply didn’t have the lateral foot speed to make it to the next level. Sad!
