Devin Lynch scored from just outside the crease with five seconds remaining in the second overtime period as unseeded Army pulled off one of the biggest upsets in college lacrosse history, stunning two-time defending NCAA champion Syracuse 9-8 in  an NCAA tournament opening-round game tonight at the Carrier Dome.

Lynch, a sophomore midfielder, scored off a feed from attackman Jeremy Boltus. You can check out post-game analysis by ESPNU’s Rob Simmelkjaer, Jack Emmer and Jamie Munro, and a replay of the winning goal by clicking here.

Army last won an NCAA tournament game in 1993. It was just Syracuse’s second-ever NCAA tournament loss at the Carrier Dome. Syracuse, ranked second in the latest USILA poll, is now 22-2 in NCAA tournament games at the Dome.

Army, ranked 16th, will play Cornell on Sunday, May 23 at noon at Stony Brook University with a berth in the national semifinals on the line.

    wow….
    that all i can say
I was really hoping to see a cornell vs. cuse rematch, but im pretty impressed with army right now

  2. Pac man says:

Congrats to Army. This sets up a Father Son Asst coach Match up with Kyle Georgalas (Cornell/Pac) and Ted Georgalas (Army/Pac).

  3. Joe Lombardi says:

    Pac man –

That’s certainly an interesting sidelight to Sunday’s game. Since it will be at Stony Brook, I’m sure a lot of fans from the Hudson Valley/Long Island/Connecticut region will be on hand as well.

Also, folks. Be sure to check out the newest poll question and exercise your right to vote.

Congrats to Army! I’m a bit disappointed as I was rooting for Syracuse but I was really impressed by Army. Sad way for Chris Daniello to end his career but look at it this way. As a senior captain he led the team in points (by far) and one of the leaders in all of D1. Stepped up as the playmaker on this team and showed why he is one of the best offensive players in the country, being named Big East attack POY.

Fantastic career Chris! You and the rest of the Syracuse seniors deserve those multiple national titles! Now let’s just see if your little brother can get more!

  5. Lax Novice says:

I was rooting for Syracuse too, and I’m disappointed for Cornell that they don’t get the rematch. But you have to give USMA its due respect for a effective game plan and effective execution, especially at the faceoff X.

I want to add my congrats to Chris Daniello, who had a great career at Syracuse and represented himself and the John Jay lacrosse community very well.

As for Cody Jamieson and other JUCO guns-for-hire with more points than college credits earned, good luck in the pros boys, we hardly knew ye.

  6. Doid23 says:

If this was anyone but Army, I would be very disappointed. But I grew up going to Army lacrosse and football games, so if it was going to be anyone, I’m glad it was Army. Was actually at West Point last week for a meeting, trying to get an Army Lacrosse hat for my son, but all I could find was Army Football and Army MATH! Cracked me up. I was talking to some Army guys about the lacrosse team, and how they beat Navy twice this year, and all they kept talking about was football. Let’s see if they change their tune this week.

  7. Syracuse says:

Congrats to Army. I, like Doid, grew up going to games at West Point. This is painful, but if ‘Cuse had to lose I’m glad it was to Army, a team I can rally behind.

  8. Long Gray Line says:

What a year! Two wins vs Navy for the first time now beating the two time national champs. GO ARMY!

  9. CT Lax says:

    Weston 7, Barlow 6

  10. Knight Time says:

Let’s go Army! Let’s make it to the Final Four!!!
