As summer turns to fall, you can expect the recruiting commitments to continue to roll in.

And as you know by now, they can happen at any time — day or night.

So keep  checking back here throughout the day and evening for all the latest.

If you checked the comments portion of our 24/7 “Breaking recruiting news” thread late last night, you learned that Mamaroneck goaltender Matt Weiner has committed to Union College.

When did you first think you had the potential to play in college?

At the age of 13 when my coach at the time, Bob Garry, told me that I had the ability to play college lacrosse when I was older. Since that point, the prospect of playing in college was a goal that I have been working towards everyday.

What showcase events were important for you to attend during the recruiting process?

I attended a lot of showcases and tournaments over the course of my sophomore and junior summers. I attended New England Top 150, Elite 180 and Blue Chip 225. I think that attending showcases after my sophomore year was very helpful to me. Getting my name out there early definitely helped me in the long run. I would recommend that players start going after their sophomore year and not wait until after their junior year. However, what I think was most important for me in my recruiting process over those past two summers was playing for Team Central in Massachusetts. We attended the Brine Shootout, Battle of the Hotbeds and the Crimson Classic, just to name a few. Playing for a very well-respected team with a fantastic and supportive coach — John Middleton —  was extremely beneficial to me.

What were the main things you liked about Union as a school and a program?

Union College is the perfect combination of everything I was looking for in a school. I was really looking for a very strong D-III program and a smaller liberal arts college. The first time I saw the Union campus, I was struck by how uniquely beautiful it was. The trimester system at Union offers a lot of flexibility with classes, internships, and travel abroad. Plus they have a five year MBA program, a six-year law program, and an eight year medical program; the possibility of being part of an accelerated program is a great opportunity. Union’s lacrosse program is one that is on the rise big time. Coach (Paul) Wehrum was a big part of my decision. Not very often does one get to play for one of the best coaches in the country, and at Union, I’ll get to play everyday for a coach who is already in the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame. Also, Union has a tremendous amount of school spirit exhibited by both the students and the alumni.

What other schools did you consider?

Middlebury, Colby, Tufts, Connecticut College, Denison and Kenyon.

As always, be sure to e-mail me with news/info on any college commitments as they are made to
