St. John’s just landed a commitment from another one of the region’s top players.

Rising senior attackman/midfielder Ryan Fitzgerald of Class C sectional champion Putnam Valley has given a verbal commitment to join the Red Storm next year.

St. John’s got a commitment from Somers rising senior defenseman John Bello last month.

Put Valley coach Brian Kuczma, who starred at Johns Hopkins and in the MLL knows what it takes to excel at the next level, and he said Fitzgerald has what it takes.

“Ryan is a talented player who has great vision and an ability to score from in tight or with an outside shot,” Kuczma said of Fitzgerald, who also visited Quinnipiac, Marist and Western New England. “It’s rare to find that in an attackman. He will be an asset to St. Johns’ program.”

Here’s a Q&A with Ryan on his selection of St. John’s:

What were the main factors in your decision to attend St. John’s?
St. John’s  has a good business program and many chances at internships in the city which is only a short ride from school. The coaches are great guys and St. John’s is a Big East school that plays at a high level.

What were your thoughts about the program and the campus when you visited?
The campus was really nice with great facilities for lacrosse. I am very excited to play in the program that it still growing and has a chance to do a lot in the Big East.

How do you see yourself contributing to the St. John’s program? What do you think your role will be there?
I see myself contributing as on offensive player most likely from the midfield. I think my role will be to help the offense.

Congratulations , to another of the section 1 players, moving on to play college ball. Fitzy you worked for this and deserve it , this is a win for St. Johns and a loss for some others that had a shot at you and lost you. After leading section 1 in the Stats catagory last season as a junior lets blow it up next season and go out with a bang. Good luck kiddo

St. John’s is becoming quite the hot spot for standout athletes these days. I just talked to Somers soccer standout Michelle Iannacchino, who has been on the varsity team since eighth grade. She has committed to St. John’s after also considering Fairfield, Villanova, Bucknell, Providence, Lafayette and Syracuse.
