The South outlasted the North tonight 19-16 in the fourth annual  Under Armour all-America Senior Classic before 2,364 fans at Towson University’s Johnny Unitas Stadium in Towson, Md.

The South team took a lead it would not relinquish just over four minutes into the fourth quarter as Georgetown-bound attackman Brian Casey of Georgetown Prep scored his third goal of the game off a feed from North Carolina-bound Marcus Holman of the Gilman School.

Ridgefield’s University of Virginia-bound attackman Matt White had four goals and two assists for the North.

White scored off a feed from Somers’ Joe Marasco 2:56 into the final period to give the North a 13-12 lead. He also scored the first goal of the game for the North, which tied it at 1-1.

The North went ahead 7-6 with 5:31 left in the second quarter on a goal by University of Virginia-bound Connor English of Manhasset.

The South’s Dave Emala scored just before halftime to tie it at 7-7.

The North had snapped a 5-5 tie 5:47 into the second quarter when South Side’s Virginia-bound Nick O’Reilly, who finished with three goals, scored off a feed from Marasco, who had a goal and two assists.

O’Reilly scored earlier in the quarter from Marasco to give the North a 6-5 lead and also had the goal that put the North ahead 5-4.

The North had tied it at 4-4 when White scored earlier in the period off a feed from North Carolina-bound Ian Bradish of West Islip.

The play of the day occurred early in the third quarter. After controlling a loose ball, Marasco drove to his left before unleashing a behind-the-back pass to White, who caught it and scored off a behind-the-back shot of his own that tied it up at 8-8.

The following players from the LaxLessons.com region started for the North team: White, O’Reilly, Marasco and Bradish.

How did Ranagan and Fenn do?

  2. THEGilmanfan says:

Ranagan was a non factor, Fenn did pretty well.

  3. GreenWhite says:

Sorry Gilman Fan, but Inside Lacrosse said Ran was one of the 10 most impressive players last night. I’m going to have to take their word over yours.

Went to couple of the “regional” games at Under Armour yest. After seeing these games and looking at scores of others, initial impression was that LI prob the best followed (in no order) by a group of “Upper” NY State, Phil and Balt. Then other teams NJ, New England (prep schools), Wash DC, Midwest.

  5. Keeler Tav says:

Yeh Matty White 4 and 2 and behind the back goal with Jo-Jo last night is one of Sportscenter’s Top 10 plays this morning. How sick is that???

  6. CoppsHill says:

Hopefully Gilman Fan won’t say White was a non factor too. Lol.

  7. ff says:

What was the attack line for the North team.

  8. LAX says:

White, Marasco, and O’Reilly started. English was a sub but he came on and immediately scored a goal. White went 4 and 2, just saw him and Jojo on sportscenter. Apparently Frocarro didn’t play for the North but they still did better on faceoffs.

In the regional underclassmen games both NY teams are 2-0 and doing very well, Baltimore is 0-2 which is pretty surprising. Too bad there’s no kids from the Hudson Valley on those teams.

  9. taz says:

Gilman was accurate – Ranagan not a factor except when he came down on a 4 on 3 and totally missed the attackman standing by himself in front of the crease to shoot from 18 yards out. (Remember, IL has had Breeley #1 for last 2 years – need I say more?)

The game was actually very sloppy with flashes of brilliance at times.

Play of the game: JoJo Marasco behind the back to Matt White behind the back goal.

Best golie: AJ Fiore – some great stops in 2nd half

Best 1 on 1 move: Connor English going inside on Howie Long to score on a diving shot.

Best individual performance: Chris LaPierre, best midfielder out there yesterday

There wasn;t much defense out there as you can tell from the score! Long poles on both teams made of number of nice plays but often turned it over by holding the ball way too long. Attack line of Whitem Marasco, O’Reilly played very well together and moved the ball great. Zac Guy nice stats but a lot of turnovers. English not a lot of touches. Jeff TUndo, who I thought was a midfielder, played attack on that line and looked like he was a midfielder. Maybe trying to get even #’s for line shifts?

Tyler Knarr won a lot of faceoffs with long pole. Steven Murphy some nice full field runs ending in a couple of assists.

South team had a much better game plan, moving the ball and finding the crease off the midfield dodge. They had a number of great looks off that play. North team seemed to basically go 1 on 1 for much of the game. Marcus Holman had a few nice plays for the South.Landon Carr from WA had a cannon for a couple of goals.

Remember that this is an exhibition as opposed to a game. After watching so much great lacrosse during state playoffs, I thought this game was sort of disappointing. THere were a lot of excellent players who didn;t really do much last night for lots of reasons – other players not passing the ball, substitution patterns, possession time while they were in, etc.

Think there was only 1 injury – David Lawson – hope it was not serious.

  10. THE CROP says:

Ranagan did have a pretty off game, stats wise, he knows it too. But i think everyone saw how much of an athlete and beast he is.

He constantly was jetting towards the net and just got his shot altered by the man trailing him i’d say it happend 3 or 4 times..not that this means anything but if he had another step on some of his runs he possibly could have scored 2 or 3 goals….in the end he didnt but im just saying he absoulutly belonged there with those kids and could have gotten on the score sheet but just missed..

The Crop was mentioned various times during the Yorktown graduation yesterday, it was great.

  11. taz says:

Totally agree he belonged and think he has huge upside in college. Will all depend how much and hard he works to get better.

  13. THEGilmanfan says:

    GreenWhite,

I was with the people who wrote the article on InsideLacrosse while at the game. He should how dominant he could be, but I dont think he had a point, which was MY point.

    CoppsHill,
The question was posed about Ranagan and Fenn, not Matt White. Your sarcasm is terrible.

  14. Lax Bus says:

Dan McKinney from Niskayuna had one assist to Jo Jo and a fantastic goal where he dodge through two long poles, faked out the camera man and the goalie for an easy score.

  15. Lax Bus says:

Still no love for upstate ;^)

  16. Lax Bus says:

I thought you guys adopted Nisky as part of your nation ;^)

  17. slacrosse says:

    taz,

Agree with your comment about the difference of this being an exhibition vs a “game”. Great to see the AA kids put on a “show” but the “regional” games or ESG are better in sense that a “team” is playing to win for the pride of its region, or Club, etc. Also these teams get to practice.

  18. slacrosse says:

    Lax Bus,

Nisky is cool. Dont feel Nisky is under appreciated.

  19. taz says:

PS – The G’town Prep guy totally out coached the Duxbury guy.
