When did John Jay/Yorktown become, well, John Jay/Yorktown?

As far as I can tell, it was 2004. I remember looking back at the crowd midway through the second quarter of the teams’ regular-season meeting (the first time John Jay ever won at Yorktown) and seeing the bleachers filled and fans rows deep along the fences.

But it wasn’t always this way. For more on how this rivalry started, and how it got to where it is now, you may want to check out this column I wrote for the latest edition of the North County News.

John Jay-Yorktown, needless to say, headlines today’s slate of games. It will be a 7:30 p.m. start. (It was originally scheduled for 7 p.m.)

Just as was the case last year when Yorktown parents did so, John Jay parents will be raising money at the door for breast cancer and will be handing out beads and hats to those who make donations. Players will have pink ribbon stickers for their helmets.  They have also lined up a corporate sponsor who will match donations received up to $2,000.

Elsewhere in Section 1, Irvington looks to improve to 11-0. The Bulldogs host Pearl River at 4:30 p.m.

In a Rockland showdown, North Rockland plays at Nanuet at 4:30 p.m.

The Long Island slate is highlighted by a 4:30 p.m. game between Floyd and Ward Melville.

In Connecticut, St. Joseph hosts Brien McMahon at 4 p.m.

  1. fan says:

    Joe,

I know you posted it earlier in the season, but could you post the sectional playoff schedule again?

  2. LacrosseInsider says:

Joe – I really enjoyed the coverage and videos you guys pulled together this week, very nice! It is hard to believe that in 12 hours the game will be played, can’t wait and looking forward to all of the post game coverage. This game should be a great one – regardless of who the better team is right now when these two teams meet the best comes out of both teams…see you tonight!

  3. Doid23 says:

    Joe,

You nailed it with that article, nice work.

The real question is when did John Jay matter to Town, since Town has always mattered to Jay. I agree that it had been building for years, and that Jay was earning a lot of respect in the 90’s, but that 2004 was the turning point. Hope the weather stays nice for everyone tonight, especially after last years monsoon.

  4. Joe Lombardi says:

Thanks, guys. Good question Doid. I think the regular-season meeting in ’04 was the turning point as far as your question goes.

  5. Joe Lombardi says:

    fan –

    Here you go:

    Section 1 playoff schedule

    May 19 – Seedings meeting

May 21 – Playoffs start – Outbracket games

May 27 – Section quarterfinals (at higher seed)

May 29 – Section semifinals (at higher seed)

June 4 – Section finals at White Plains.
    Class C – 3 p.m., Class A – 5:30 p.m. Class B – 8 p.m.

  6. Joe Lombardi says:

Just wanted to note a couple of things in case you missed them in the main body of the post above.

    • The Yorktown at John Jay game tonight has been moved to a 7:30 p.m. start from 7 p.m.

    • Just as was the case last year when Yorktown parents did so, John Jay parents will be raising money at the door for breast cancer and will be handing out beads and hats to those who make donations. Players will have pink ribbon stickers for their helmets. They have also lined up a corporate sponsor who will match donations received up to $2,000.

  7. TownLax says:

Joe, thanks for the info on breast cancer donations and the time change tonight. I don’t know what we’d ever do without you.

  8. Laximus says:

Also, thanks for the info on sectionals. I know you posted it a while back but thanks for posting it again. Without you Joe no one would have any idea about all this stuff because no else reports it.

  9. Lax Novice says:

When I lived in Lewisboro from 1990-1997 the only lacrosse program of any note was Yroktown’s. John Jay was as much a pushover as any of the other teams in the area. Who knew after we left that the Indians would establish the program they have now! Tonight might be a tough one for the home team on Route 121, but the future seems bright. Good luck to all.

  10. Old Rugger says:

Purple and White John Deere is warming up. Hope it is a good one.

  11. Cradler says:

Joe you really are our lifeline to what’s going on. It’s much appreciated.

  12. Lefty Crank says:

    Lax Novice,
Pac won a state championship in 1996, they were not much of a pushover.

  13. ripo says:

Lakeland was in the state championship in 91. JJ was horrible back then

  14. Joe Lombardi says:

Ripo is right and wrong. Lakeland was in the state final in 1991. But John Jay was hardly “horrible” back then. A year earlier, the Indians nearly defeated a Yorktown team that included Roy Colsey and Dom Fin in the sectional final. You can read more about that in the North County News column I posted earlier previewing the John Jay-Yorktown game. Here’s that link:
    http://ncnlocal.com/sports/TheJoeShow.asp

  15. Joe Lombardi says:

I re-posted the Section 1 playoff schedule earlier in this thread.
Here’s the direct link to it:
    http://laxlessons.com/blog/2009/05/section-1-state-playoff-schedule/

Sections 8/11 dates are same as Section 1. We will have a separate post with those sites.

In the meantime, here’s the FCIAC:

May 27, quarterfinals: higher seeds host. 4 p.m. starts, though some may go to later starting times

May 29, semifinals: at Brien McMahon, 4 and 6:30 p.m.

June 2, final: at McMahon, 7:30 (girls final at 5:15)

  16. Joe Lombardi says:

An added tidbit to the info posted earlier about tonight’s 7:30 Yorktown at John Jay game benefiting breast cancer research. Paraco Gas is the corporate sponsor that will be matching contributions of to $2,000. It will have pink trucks at the game tonight.

  17. syracuse says:

I can tell you from experience that John Jay’s program was good and challenging Yorktown as far back as 1988 or 1989. Three names stand out to me, two guys I played against and another who was very good.

    Marty Kelly
    Tom Peters
    Tom Furman (spelling?)

Kelly was the section’s premier attackman for a long time. Peters was a bull of a middie, built like a freight train and a real difficult guy to figure out on draws. Furman, if memory serves me, was an excellent all-around player, I believe he was a middie but could be wrong.

Jay played Yorktown to several games that were close right down to the end, including a few that had many in Town nation a little nervous. Bob Kear did a lot with what he had, so let’s not just dismiss the pre-2000s Jay teams. They have been building this thing for a long time.

  18. Observer says:

Lax Novice snd Ripo must have abnesia. John Jay was very good throughout the 90s as Joe and Syracuse point out.

  19. Jaybird says:

Absolutely. Jay had an attackman Charles Cirigliano in 90 who went to Duke and a defenseman Anthony Newman who was a stud at Virginia. As usual Ripo is a fountain of misinformation.

  20. jjjjjjjjjjj says:

Let’s not forget Jay’s John Cunniffe in 1985 who went on to West Point and Chris Bates 1986 who is now Drexel’s coach.

  21. PurpleReigns says:

Gotta love that Indians tradition … Once a powerhouse always a powerhouse.

  22. LAX says:

I know Kelly was an AA early 90s. And yes around that time JJ nearly pulled off a win against a stacked town team before town came back.

  23. Indian J says:

1990 was one of the best Jay teams. They had two All Americans in Cirigliano (Duke) and Newman (Virginia) and they beat everyone except Town. They beat Wilton that year who was the CT state Champion.

In the Class B sec finals that year, Jay went up on Town 5-1. Ofcourse, Town came roaring back and ended up winning 10-7, but it was a legit sectional final game.

Cunniffe’s teams were excellent and Kelly was nasty, a two time all-american for Jay as well as an All-American for Nazareth. Kelly scored the game winner in OT to lead Nazareth to a DIII title over Hobart in 1992. To be sure Jay from 86-89 was an excellent lacrosse team. Winning there first Sectional Title in 1988 over Walter Panas H.S.

In 91, Jay was decent but did get spanked by L/P and Town and then 92,93 and 94 were the worst years in the program’s history.

From 95-99 Jay was in the Class B sectional finals, winning in 97 and 98 ( over Brewster and Nyack). Jay beat Yorktown 7-5 for the first time ever in 1999 and then was slightly above average from 2000-2002. In 2003 the up surge began and in 2004 Jay beat Town again and won the power league, lossing to Town in the Sec Finals- the rest is more recent.

  24. jjjjjjjjjjj says:

Thanx Indian J – pretty cool to learn about the history of J’s lax program!

  25. Doid23 says:

Thanks for setting the record straight fellas.

Also, Marty Kelly was a two time AA at Jay, 3 time AA at Naz, and now head coach at Roger Williams.

  26. Joe Lombardi says:

Here”s our first final of the day, folks.
    St. Joseph’s 13, Brien McMahon 9

Hey Joe, I know that you would want to know that your Dayton Flyer’s just beat St. John’s, 10-9 in O/T to advance to the MCLA D2 Championship. They will be facing the team I mentioned before, the St. Thomas, which absolutely crushed Davenport today, 18-7.

  53. syracuse says:

  54. lax67 says:

Hats off to the JJ coaching staff for playing such a great defensive game…Containing Interlicchio to only 3pts is something to be proud of (believe it or not lol)…..Ranagan had a day!!! also nice coming out party for Lieberman!! Good job by both teams!!

  55. LacrosseInsider says:

Great game by two great programs! Dunworth and the rest of the Jay D did a great job. Ranagan is a beast!! can’t wait to see him at Hopkins. Jay is playing very well right now – for all intensive purposes this game was a great success, to be able to play a great team like Yorktown that close has to help going into the Sectionals. Now that this game is over I can officially back both of these teams – Sectionals and beyond (I hope!). Time for bed, taking my kid to Hofstra tomorrow for my LAX. Looking forward to post game coverage (Joe was working it when we left!)

  56. ripo says:

As a JJ fan I was very proud of the hustle of the J kids and the game plan that the coaches came in with. This team has improved more than any team out there.

  57. jjjjjjjjjjj says:

JJ lax has come a long way this season and these boys should be extremely proud of themselves! keep it up and look forward to watching you in the playoffs!

  58. Indian J says:

Jay played very well last night- so did Town. We have to be thinking sectional title now. There’s simply no reason why it should not be ours.

  59. slacrosse says:

With this close loss to Town and the win over a very good syosset team Jay has improved to the point where they’re definitely team to beat in Class B

  60. laxfever says:

Great game to watch at Jay last night. Especially nice to see fans of all ages rooting for their team. Jay surprised me with their size and quickness, but Town is showing their resiliency – coming from behind when it’s needed. I’m delighted both coaches let the players do their thing without much interruption. Both sided were able to take their game up a notch. I’ve yet to see Town play their best game, and they keep improving. Ranagan deserves all his hype!
    On to Wilton..

  61. Joe Lombardi says:

    Bear –

Thanks for the update on the Flyers. On to the finals!

In Division I, Michigan, with a nice contingent of players from the region, plays Chapman at 7 tonight for the title. Here are the D-I brackets:
