Many viewed last year’s Section 1 Class C final as a given.

Rye was going to win a fourth straight title.

Someone forgot to tell that to the Byram Hills Bobcats, who built a surprising 4-3 lead at the half. But the Garnets battled back and went ahead 5-4 in the third quarter on a goal by Rob Santangelo. The Bobcats then tied it at 5-5. Rye then scored five straight goals and wound up winning 10-5.

The teams meet for the first time since then today at 5 p.m. at Rye.

In other action today in what is a very busy day Section 1, rivals Pleasantville and Briarcliff meet at 4:30 at Briarcliff.

You can check out the complete Section 1 schedule for today here.

Red-hot Manhasset meets a Chaminade team coming off back-to-back losses at 4:45 p.m. at Chaminade to highlight the Long Island slate.

New Canaan plays at Norwalk at 7 p.m. to highlight the Fairfield County schedule.

You do you like in the Pac WP matchup today

  2. RyeGuy says:

Could have been a decent game a month ago but we’re a different team now. I feel bad for Byram.
    Rye 12, Byram 6

  3. Setter says:

Joe, I have to say I’m surprise you pick Chaminade over Manhasset. We are playing much better than them right now and have more offesine weapons.
    Set 9, Nade 7

  4. HV Lax says:

Looking at the link for the list of games there are a couple of interesting Rockland vs Westchester games – Suffern at Somers and South at John Jay. What are your thoughts Joe?

  5. bobcat says:

    byram hills team…is jacked….rye….is not

  6. syracuse says:

Mahopac-White Plains is going to be a great game. Who’d a thunk?

It will go one of two ways:

Mahopac comes out and blows WP’s doors off and finally saves some face after a bunch of disheartening losses or WP contnues its really good play of late.

I think if WP can race out to a 3-0 lead against PV and maintain a lead basically the entire game and then pull it out late, they can do the same against ‘Pac.

The question is, will we see the Mahopac all the posters on this board have been clamoring about all season? Or will WP validate that which many of us already believe — that ‘Pac is more hype than substance?

I like WP is a close one. James Bryant and Micheal Trapp control the game at the faceoff dot …

    White Plains wins 8-6.

  7. Joe Lombardi says:

    Setter –

I have seen both Manhasset and Chaminade and agree the Indians have a bit more on offense. However, I was thoroughly impressed at how fundamentally sound and strong defensively the Flyers are. I realize we have Manhasset No. 1 in our brand-new rankings too. Call this pick a hunch. We’ll see if I’m right. If not, be sure to let me hear it!

I like the ‘Cuse 8-6 score. In fact, that’s what I’m going with too, but with Mahopac winning. That is not to take away from the breakout season the Tigers are having or the fantastic job Mark Armogida has done that ‘Cuse documented so well — and so thoroughly I might add — in the story we published here yesterday.

But let me say this, if White Plains is able to beat Put Valley and Mahopac back-to-back, it will be the story of the season so far in Section 1. Anyone who understands the competitive balance structure — as ‘Cuse explained well — understands that. Should be real interesting, gang. Stay tuned.

  8. hghs says:

coach degregorio is visitng his home turf today at 430.

any predicits of hg v pv?

  9. Joe Lombardi says:

    HV Lax –

Somers will once again be minus Matt Deiana, who has been out since the Ridgefield game and is likely to miss the remainder of the regular season. Still, the Tuskers have too much for the Mounties to counter. Keep an eye on Suffern junior Bryan Bergstol, who is a standout goalie.

Speaking of that, there’s none better than another Rockland-based netminder, Luke Haggerty, but he will have his hands full tonight against John Jay. It’s senior night.

I expected both Somers and John Jay to win quite comfortably.

  10. Joe Lombardi says:

With Vin DeGregorio returning to Put Valley, where he was an assistant, I think there will be a lot of emotions on both sides, including the former Put Valley players he worked with.

I wouldn’t be shocked if Greeley pulled off the upset. But Put Valley has been so consistent this season and will be eager to bounce back after losing to White Plains.

    Put Valley 11, Greeley 9

  11. syracuse says:

Did I just see Joe and ‘Cuse actually … sort of … agree on something?

In case you are wondering about the White Plains story Joe was referring to, which deals somewhat with today’s Mahopac game, here is the link:

  12. Joe Lombardi says:

Not at all. We actually disagree by four-plus goals and have completely different outcomes. Sure the scores are the same though, so I guess you may a point.

  13. […] • Predictions/score updates for today’s action throughout the region. […]

  14. syracuse says:

I always have a point. How I choose to make it is usually my undoing. If White Plains loses today it will add more validity to the “VIEW Curse.”

  15. Trojan Horse says:

    Nade 12, Set 11

  16. RedGray says:

    Somers 16
    Suffern 6

Peaches scores his usual 6 g’s
    JoJo 5-2
    Pfiff 2-2

  17. Jaybird says:

    Jay 16, C. South 4
Savs run stall offense but in fourth quarter so as not to completely run up the score lol.

  18. Pequa says:

    Set 9, Chaminade 8

Should be a thriller. Connor English, who else, gets the game winner.

  19. 914-243 says:

On my way soon to watch YTown and brew i don’t think it will be much of a game town 14 brew 4 but never miss a opportunity to watch the yboys play

  20. WhaleBelt says:

Manhasset up 3-0 8 mins into first quarter

  21. WhaleBelt says:

4-2 Manhasset end of the first

  22. LI Lax says:

Maybe they are No. 1 after all. Haha.
    Keep those updates coming WhaleBelt.

  23. WhaleBelt says:

check out the CHSAA forum on laxpower – some guy is posting updates there, which is where i got them

  24. fan says:

Yorktown 12 Brewster 3 at the half

  25. LAX says:

‘Set up 9-5 after three qtrs. English has 5 goals.

  26. Syracuse says:

BREAKING: White Plains 10, Mahopac 5 FINAL. … White Plains’ coach just called me and will get back to me later with details. … Real quick, Mahopac raced out to 3-0 lead. WP called timeout and the game changed from there.

This is a HUGE win for WP and great news for the rest of the section.

  27. Joe Lombardi says:

    Congrats to White Plains.

While we’re on the topic of southern/central Westchester teams on the rise, I’m hear at the old alma mater, Irvington, which is looking to improve to 9-0. The Bulldogs, who are in their third year as a varsity program, lead Eastchester 6-3 with seven minutes remaining.

  28. LAX says:

“JJ is playing White Plains. LOL. I guess the Sav’s will take a win any way they can get it.”

“Yes and John Jay only won 10-6 if you can believe that. Where is my friend Ripo. Come out come out wherever you are!”

-Mahopac fans who I will not name. They don’t represent a good Mahopac team.

Great job White Plains, really showing that they’re a top 10 section 1 team. I was eagerly anticipating the score of this game for a week, but I think that these guys already realized that they were all talk.

  29. Joe Lombardi says:

Somers defeated Suffern 15-1. The final was just updated in the main body of the post.

  30. WhaleBelt says:

    Manhasset beats Chaminade 9-7

  31. LAX says:

    Any PV-Greeley updates?

  32. Joe Lombardi says:

    Final: Irvington 7, Eastchester 4

  33. Wood Stick War Club says:

Rye calms down BH 8-5, not as close as the final score was….

  34. Green Wave says:

Hey Joe. Thanks for catching the Irvington game today. You were a big hit with the bleacher creatures. Did you hear them calling your name even though you were across on the other side of the field?

  35. B&W says:

Greeley rolls PV… PV never controlled the ball.

  36. LAX says:

score? Also, any updates on the JJ game?

  37. taz says:

    Manhasset 9 – Chaminade 7

Not as close as the score. English had 5. Jack Meyer in cage was outstanding. Was 8-3 at half and 9-4 after 3.

  38. parent says:

Don’t have a score but the update I received from my wife was that Jay winning by “a lot”

  39. Wood Stick War Club says:

Any scoop on Scarsdale Lax? Any thoughts on Rye-Greeley?

  40. LAX says:

I hear Greeley crushes PV 13-4 with most of PVs goals coming after starters were pulled. Surpising???

  41. lax watch says:

Danny Leventhal with 7g for Greeley

  42. LacrosseInsider says:

Jay was up 12 to 3 when I left in the 4th. Jay went up 4 to 0 quick but then CS scored 3 straight to make it 4 to 3. By halftime it was 7 to 3 Jay, Haggerty put on a goalie clinic in the 3rd, I think he may have held Jay to 1 goal and he stopped a bunch that should have gone in, that kid is the real deal. By the time I left with about 6 mins left it was 12 to 3.

  43. lacrosse says:

any news on who scored for jay

  44. laxerdude says:

    Haggerty had 33 saves

  45. LAX says:

33 saves??? I’m putting Haggerty down on my AA list. Who did well for JJ?

  46. LacrosseInsider says:

He stopped several that were point blank 1 on 1 and his clears were actually almost too good for his team (they were dropping them, not running to the ball, etc). Anyone know where he is going to college?

  47. Joe Lombardi says:

Here are some more finals from today and tonight. Be sure to check the main body of this post for more:

    Greenwich HS 13, Westhill 3

  48. Syracuse says:

    Joe, guys:

I just added a ton of scores to the body copy of this thread.

  49. slacrosse says:

Rye played OK (not great) today with pretty good patches (but not consistent) on O and D. Ground balls pick-ups could have been much better.

Rye’s margin of win could have been by 6-7 but for BH’s goalie who made some great saves.

  50. slacrosse says:

Congrats White Plains. I just like a new program making a a positive push this year!!

  51. 914-243 says:

Hag’s put on a goalie clinic that you would have love to see the kid is absolutly
the real deal i finally saw what they were saying about the best one on one goalie around absolutly incredible it was great to watch nice job hag’s

  52. Joe Lombardi says:

    914-243 —

I was originally hoping to make it up to the South-John Jay game after the Eastchester-Irvington game, which did not start till close to 5:30. Then, following the game, I wound up catching up with some former teachers of mine who were at the game, and checking out some new facilities in the athletic center (like any proud alum would), and before I knew it, it was 8 o’clock.

In any case, I definitely wish I had seen it. In fact, I have seen clinics similar to that by Luke before. He’s not only talented, but fun to watch — which you don’t often find in a goaltender. He is on the short list of the top goalies in Section 1 I have seen play this decade without a doubt.

  53. 914-243 says:

i haven’t seen as many as you but he
is the best i’ve seen in a very long time

  54. Joe Lombardi says:

    Green Wave –

Sorry for the delayed response. Just saw your comment (No. 34) now. Yeah, I definitely heard them. It was great getting a shout out at the old alma mater.

I’m working on a report on today’s Irvington win that will be up shortly.

  55. Section1 says:

33 saves? Thats the most saves I have heard in a while. Is there any record on most saves in a game.

  56. sec1 says:

The NYS High School record for saves is 50 it has been done twice, Joe Colarusso Town 1980 has the third most with 47, also Lew Janavey has the 5th most 7th most and 13th with 42,41,38.. Also 33 would be 28th best All time, there are many other Sec1 Goalies in top 50…

  57. LoveTownLax says:

    great info, sec1 – yeah Joey C!
