Just got back from what has to be considered the game of the year so far in Section 1 this season, folks.

Lakeland/Panas beat John Jay for the first time in nine years 13-12 on a goal by junior Will Fallo with 2:02 remaining in overtime.

This game had many interesting angles and plot twists.

In addition to the fact LP hadn’t beaten JJ for so long, here are a few more:

• The game was delayed a half-hour because Lakeland/Panas’ bus broke down on Route 202, five minutes from the high school. Another bus was sent over to bring the team, which was waiting for it at FDR Park, to John Jay.

• LP rushed through warmups as a result, and before it knew it, fell begind 7-2 early in the third quarter.

• The Rebels then outscored JJ 10-3 in the second and third quarters and snapped an 8-8 tie with 10:38 remaining in the third period on Fallo’s first goal of the game.

• John Jay then came back and outscored LP 3-0 in the fourth quarter to force OT.

• JJ senior star Will Stewart, who had been sidelined since the Somers game with a shoulder injury, returned to the Indians’ lineup and played more than expected, scoring three goals. Stewart forced overtime, tying it at 12-12 on an unassisted goal with three minutes remaining in regulation. After his first goal, coaches and teammates jokingly told him to shake hands in celebration not high five (which is how he aggravated his shoulder injury vs. Somers).

• As Jim Lindsay pointed out in our interview, the last time LP played at JJ — in last year’s Class  A sectional final, it lost to Yorktown 17-5.

Wow. What drama. What excitement. What a game.

We will be back with more team coverage. After the game, Ryan Rabs and I conducted video interviews with Fallo and teammates Shawn Honovich (three goals) and all-America attckman Jack Doherty (who was limited to one goal and one assist) as well as coach Jim Lindsay. We talked about the game, of course, and also looked ahead to Saturday’s Murphy Cup.

We also interviewed John Jay coach Nick Savastano, himself a Lakeland grad, to get his thoughts on the game and the way his young team has progressed this season.

Great game!! Good to see Stewart (and others?) back (not for whole game) and productive. Think teams played fairly equally.

    # 21 (I think) for LP. Waht a kid. Can’t be taller then a few inches over 5 ft with his long pole towering over him–but the kid is fast, aggressive, good stick skills–really contributed big time!!

  9. laxalot says:

I have never watched a lacrosse game where the players are walking when they are on the field until the JJ/LP game. JJ players were slow getting to their own goal, their shots are weak and most importantly they don’t play as a team. Coming out of a huddle all the players have their heads down with the look of defeat at a point when they need to be psyched to win. Savs better start telling these kids not to worry about their individual stats and at practice today he better run them, they need it!

  10. Phil says:

laxalot your the man. you should try doing something yourself instead of ripping on high schoolers
until u do something yourself dont talk

  11. Phil says:

o and another thing mr. laxalot… u wouldnt be able to imagine the amount of running the j boys do in practice, ive seen the practices

  12. slacrosse says:

    Phil,

People may agree or disagree with laxalot but I feel his comment is within bounds of a criticism .

As long as you keep it general, no names. etc., its fine–tell it like you see it!!

So no I dont think laxalots comment was “ripping on highs schoolers”.

You’ve seen some of the personal rips that are really negative towards kids–and you KNOW the difference between them and laxalots comment.

  13. ripo says:

Hey not bad for JJ young boys to take the number 2 team in the area to overtime and could of won it. This team has heart and plays hard. No body will want to play this team in the playoffs. They are dangerous because of the tough schedule they play and the coaching they have.

  14. Lax Novice says:

Nice to see young Stewart coming back and showing leadership with great production at crunch time. That’ll mean good things for his team later on.

And nothing wrong with a good handshake, either.

  15. Big Sexy says:

Will Fallo is a complete monster!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    “Im sooo Great”- Will Fallo
