It’s one of the most tradition-rich high school lacrosse rivalries in the nation.

And one of the most one-sided.

Since 1980, Ward Melville vs. Yorktown has been a heated annual affair.

It’s one of the marquee matchups in the region on tap for today.

Though Yorktown has beaten the Patriots just twice in the last 13 years (and seven times in the 35 all-time meetings between the teams), there have been plenty of memorable moments.

Here are a couple:

The ‘Huskers dealt Ward Melville its only loss of the season back in 1974.

During Yorktown coach Dave Marr’s junior year at YHS, the ‘Huskers fell to WM 10-9 in overtime. Todd Sauerbrun, the NFL punter, had four goals in the second half for the Patriots.

This year, the ‘Huskers have a clear edge in the matchup of programs that have combined for 13 state titles. Yorktown, after all, has climbed to the No. 2 in the LaxLessons.com Top 25 regional rankings. Ward Melville dropped out of the rankings.

There are plenty of other big games on Saturday that we will be bringing you updates on.

The Haverford School in Pennsylvania is hosting quite a day of lax that will feature two of the heavy hitters in the LaxLessons Top 25 (Darien and Garden City). Included in the Checking for Cancer tourney lineup of games on its two fields:

Georgetown Prep (Md.) vs. Duxbury (Mass.), 11 a.m.

Haverford vs. Downingtown East (Pa.), 11:30 p.m.

Garden City vs. St. Paul’s (Md.), 1 p.m.

Darien vs. Malverne Prep, 1:30 p.m.

Meanwhile, here at home, Northport hosts Manhasset at 11 a.m. and Shoreham-Wading River visits Farmingdale in a high noon showdown.

At 1 p.m., Mahopac visits Calhoun.

There’s also a big doubleader at St. Anthony’s. St Anthony’s meets Delbarton and Fairfield Prep takes on Chaminade.

Four-time defending Section 1 Class B champ John Jay faces a huge test at Horace Greeley at 1 p.m. John Jay will be minus its most established offensive weapon, Will Stewart, who is out with a shoulder injury until at least April 28. Greeley, which jumped out to a 3-0 start, has allowed 31 goals in its last two games — losses to Yorktown and Somers, arguably the two best teams in the section.

After falling short against Rye in a bid to beat a traditional power, Iona Prep will try again today at 1:30 p.m. when it hosts Lakeland/Panas in what promises to be a very interest, down-to-the-wire affair.

Check out an in-depth breakdown of the L/P vs. Iona Prep, John Jay vs. Greeley and Ward Melville vs. Yorktown games by Isaac Cass of the North County News by clicking here.

Still plenty more big games in what has to be the most action-packed Saturday of the season so far.

There is a good mix of teams from throughout the region represented in the New Fairfield tournament.

Here’s the slate:

Noon: New Milford vs Willliam Floyd

3 p.m.: Plainedge vs Cheshire

7:30 p.m.: New Fairfield vs Rye

Under the lights tonight, Somers hosts Clarkstown South at 7:30 p.m. and Huntington plays at Cold Spring Harbor at 7:30 p.m.

Whew. It’s going to be quite a day. Keep on track of the action by checking the main body of this post (the portion you are reading right now) from the late morning to the late evening.

Along the way, be sure to post any info/scores you have as well.

  1. LAX says:

Any word on when Stewart is coming back? How serious is the injury?

  2. John FANnessy says:

Yorktown will be back with a vengeance after it’s poor performance against Greeley. Coach Lodewick will have his suffocation defense at its finest, and it seems as if Melville will have no answers to slow down Yorktown’s balanced attack, as show against Greeley.

The Crop will indeed be in full effect, shades and all. Get ready, Greeley could have potentially been the kick in the butt the boys in green needed to come back down to earth. Not to mention, playing on Charlie’s Carpet instead of Melville’s “Lucky Field,” will be a whole world’s difference.

  3. syracuse says:

28-7. My God. It’s worse than I thought.

  4. TheHeights says:

LP-Iona has potential to be the best game of the day. Both teams really need it and want it. LP to show there good start is not a fluke and bc they lost to Iona last year. Iona bc it already lost to an average Rye team and will prob lose to Somers so this is there only chance to beat a recognized Section 1 team. I like Iona 9-7.

  5. PatHan says:

Once again this Saturday I will be stuck at work and looking forward to getting your game updates. You guys have been doing a great job with updates on multiple games at once.

  6. syracuse says:

    TheHeights,

Amen brother. I agree with you. “The Game” based on history and tradition and all that other stuff is obviously Town-Melville, but for fast-paced action, probably a ton of goals and a chance to see offensive talents like Doherty and Trizano, L/P-IP is going to be a good one for sure.

    PatHan,

Tip of the cap to you too my friend. Joe has REALLY done a tremendous job with this site. I only wish I could help him more.

    To everyone else,

The coverage you see now of the tri-state area will only improve as the season moves on. You know what to expect from us, so keep coming back whenever you get a free minute.

One never knows what ‘CUSE will say (or do, for that matter) or who Joe will interview.

Rumor has it, he’s doing a jailhouse sitdown with Bernie Madoff this week. And he’s efforting with the Octomom’s people for 5 minutes at her earliest convenience.

Updates should start hot and heavy after 1:30 p.m. so come on back!

    Full recaps to follow.

  7. MelKipersHair says:

keep up the great work dudes, this site rocks

my hair will be previewing the nfl draft later this wknd.

  8. TOWNfan says:

Any predictions on the ward town game ?

  9. syracuse says:

We’ve just learned that Yorktown’s Kevin Interlicchio needs just 1 more goal for 100 in his career. Anyone remember the last time a junior had 100 goals for Yorktown? I sure don’t. If it happens today vs. Ward Melville, you will know immediately so please check back with us this afternoon.

    Theories on Yorktown-Ward Melville:

“This game is a must-win for Yorktown, considering that the Huskers have all these star players going to great colleges and that the Patriots are said to be ‘down.'”

I don’t believe that Ward Melville is down. It is just not a vintage Ward Melville team, yet. I think the Pats could throw a JV team out there and still hold a lot of schools to less than 10 goals.

If ever Yorktown is going to beat Melville, today better be the day. The Huskers may not get an opportunity like this again.

“Another reason why Yorktown has to win is because this is the barometer game. Sure, the Huskers are 5-0 and beat St. Anthony’s, but with huge games on the horizon against Chaminade, Darien, John Jay and the Murphy Cup tilt, the best way to send a message is to beat a team that has handled you consistently over the last 30-plus years.”

Very true. Ward Melville is 28-7 all-time against Yorktown, including wins in 11 of the last 13 meetings. Town last won in 2001 and before that 1994 or 1995. While it would be a bit much to say a loss today would be devastating, I do think a defeat would paint the picture of this team as just another good Yorktown team, one that will do what it customarily has done more often than not in the last 15 years: Win the section; lose on Long Island.

“Yorktown is said to be the KI and Ranagan show. We know they have other players. Will we see them produce against the higher quality opponents?”

Interlicchio had just 1 goal against Greeley; Ranagan had 8. Interlicchio had 7 against Somers; Ranagan had 1 or 2. Yorktown scored 27 goals in those two games. Someone else filled the net. I think it will make a lot Town supporters feel better if Casey, Lieberman and others produce against Melville, Darien, Chaminade, Jay and L/P because it will show that come sectionals and states that Town is a lot more than a true 2-man show offensively.

“Who does Melville have? Where are they going to school next year?”

Not a lot is known about this team, but if you know, please share with us.

    “Prediction?”

    I say Yorktown 7-4.

And if you keep your eyes fixed squarely on June, the result of this game — at least right now — should tell you whether Town can play with West Islip. We all know how good the Lions are, but what many may not know is West Islip-Ward Melville circa 2009 could be a very one-sided affair in favor of Islip.

  10. THE CROP says:

    ytown wins 11-5

TOWN is not getting the GBs they need right now it looks like.

  30. LAX says:

any more updates from JJ-Greeley much appreciated

  31. LAX says:

yeah town’s making some unnecessary turnovers and I think Melville’s beating them on faceoffs and Ground Balls they had more possession

  32. Dinder says:

wow horrible call by the ref…that was not a slash

  33. Paratrooper says:

Any update on the Garden City Game?

  34. Dinder says:

4-3 WM going into half..town is gunna have to get the ball more on Offence if there gunna wanna take this game. KI has taken it to the cage I think 3 times and has scored twice..get it in his hands.

  35. Joe Lombardi says:

LP has rallied to take an 8-7 lead over IP with 8:14 left in regulatio.

  36. Joe Lombardi says:

LP has pulled away and leads 10-7 with less than two minutes remaining.

  37. Joe Lombardi says:

A goal by Michael O’Hagan pulls IP within 10-9 with 56 seconds left in regulation.

    Stay tuned!

  38. Dinder says:

D is not playing that great…mike prob should have had that last goal.

  39. jlombardi says:

O’Hagan wins the FO. (Rizano has a good look from the doorstep but it goes wide. LP has ball with 36 seconds to go.

  40. Joe Lombardi says:

    LP wins 10-9. Great game.

  41. LAX says:

    6-3 Melville

  42. LAX says:

Melville wins 8-6. Anyone have JJ-Greeley final???

  43. LAX says:

Just got word JJ wins 20-11. Yes, 20 goals without Will Stewart against Greeley.

  44. Indian J says:

Another blog lists the final JJ 20 Greely 11. Im surprised, if the report is accurate, that we put in 20. Thats quite a bit of scoring.

  45. BigBadBear says:

well, y’town faithful, you have to be disappointed with that..you did have 3 pipes that I counted…but got beat on ground balls, FO’s, all day..way too many turnovers, and when you did get to settle the ball, just no movement or cutters..simply iso your big men, and waiting to shoot or dump it off not going to work against a very good WM D…

hopefully, this is a wake up call, lots of time to get better

  46. freelaxer says:

The Greely-Jay score was indeed 20-11. Without Stewart many thought the Jay offense would go downhill but that was not the case. Every starter scored for Jay, leading them were Daniello and Walter with 4. Beck had 3, Masterson 2, and Weil and J Morris with one each. That’s 15 total goals for the starters. Also had some goals by the backups when they started going in at the end of the 4th. All around great offensive performance. 5 of goals for Greely were on man up as well.

  47. solidD says:

yes final score of jj-greely game was 20-11. Starters taken out at 17-10 mid fourth.
    Scoring for jj:
    Daniello-4
    Forrest Walter- 4
    Drew Beck-4
    A. Masterson-2
    Harrison Silver-1
    J. Morris-1
    B. Morris-1
    Jake Weil-1
    B. Pray-1
and i’m not sure who had the last one.

  48. Lax Novice says:

    Malvern Prep 9 – Darien 4

  49. ytowns says:

Yorktown players, you should be embarrassed for playing like that on Charlie Murphy field…Getting beat by GB’s and faceoffs all day is just not permitted…CAPTAINS, SENIORS WAKE UP!!!!!

Hats off to Ward Melville for making that long trip and really giving it to the Huskers, you guys played hard!!!!

  50. Joe Lombardi says:

    St. Paul’s 7, Garden City 5 – Final

  51. J LAX says:

cant wait for stewart to get back, hopefully he gets better for the L/P game. Looks like the offense can work without him but when they get him back they will be even more scary. think it would have been a different game if he was there for the rest of the somers game…

  52. defense? says:

uhm. Greely has now let up 51 goals in 3 games! They might want to fix something fast.

  53. freelaxer says:

Cuse- didn’t bocklet have 100 goals as a junior?

  54. freelaxer says:

ohh sorry didn’t see the for yorktown part, Sorry for doubting you

  55. Joe Lombardi says:

    Also from Haverford tourney:

    Georgetown Prep 13, Duxbury 1

  56. Rug says:

    mahopac wins 8-5

  57. ytown says:

Tough loss for ytown, seems as if the 2 man show may not be enough to get things done. KI and Ranagan are legit and can play with anyone, but the supporters have to get it done as well. Against a good D it will be tough to score 7 goals a game for KI or 8 like Ranagan did. They need more balance and people to fill in for the losses last year of Rocky Kurpis and Froats. I hope this wakes them up and brings them down to earth as they were gaining pretty big heads already. I hope for the best and hope this loss turns into a BIG win later.

  58. LaxMan says:

i thought the defense played well for yorktown. They just had to play defense for far too long due to losing so many face offs, when yorktown scored they couldn’t get a run going by winning the following face off. The ground balls going to melville was true but they were lucky on alot of them no excuse but it seemed like everytime the ball rolled away from the pile it ended up at the feet of a melville player. No excuses but the difference in the game was face offs and lack of possesions. credit the melville D for not allowing good shots. And 4 posts in the game didn’t help yorktown either. In defeat they can still learn from the mistakes and fix them, I dont think this is just another Decent Yorktown team they still have a great shot at turning some heads down the road and this team has plenty of time to get better.

  59. Pinky says:

The crop was just reaped!!! A little full of yourselves??? Drop the ego and play hard nosed section I lacrosse and you will have better results…

  60. THE CROP says:

Pinky, if we were actually on the field, we would play hard nosed lacrosse but the crop is in the crowd sargeant doofus….and saying yorktown doesnt play hard nosed lacrosse is a joke…all great teams have a slip up, if anything it could be for the better. Its hard to be a dominating machine all season long. im not too worried. Dissapointing yes, but if they do it 4or 5 times this year before playoffs, then i’ll be worried..it was a good close game, a loss is a loss but yorktown almost pulled it off never having posession of the ball and hit a bunch of pipes.

were not full of ourselves, we just know we’re better then you…

  61. syracuse says:

Guys, game recap is posted. Drinky time.

  62. nylaxer says:

Greeley’s strength has been its attack line and fo guy. Defense is killing them.

  63. BigBadBear says:

listen LaxMan, I am rooting for y’town all the way…BUT…I would say the defense was ok…didn’t you think you had more than a little trouble with the clear, particularly in the first half? and when their pole came down, #23 I think, and scored with no one challenging him..well, I thought that was the nail in the coffin…however, loses in April can be learning opportunity…I did think that #15 (Casey?) played well in spots///

random thought..does anyone else think that perhaps inverting Ranagan, getting him behind the cage, with KI on top might have shaken things up a bit?

  64. Joe Lombardi says:

Clarkstown South has jumped out to an early 1-0 lead vs. Somers on a goal by Sean Day. Check the main body of this thread for more updates.

  65. LaxMan says:

i think the clearing game has to be crisper i didn’t understand why when they were down 6 to 5 #5 with the ball was right infront of the midline and didn’t take it over instead passed backwards to the goalie and then the ball was thrown away out of bounds by the goalie which led to another melville goal. That was the nail in the coffin. Truthfully unless the face off situation is fixed i believe it will be hard to beat Good long island teams

  66. ripo says:

nice job yorktown you should not have petition to go up to class A. You could of won a class B State easy this year.

  67. LaxMan says:

its called having guts, and respect for better competition. Maybe u would be satisfied playing in a weaker class so u could roll but not when ur Yorktown. Maybe when ur team has half as much history and tradition u’ll understand until then keep ur sarcasm to urself and go cheer on ur second rate team

  68. syracuse says:

Easy? Someone hasn’t the first clue about Niskayuna. They are probably better than Melville.

  69. syracuse says:

Coach Hoppey had a master gameplan. He had his kids pressure Yorktown all over the field. And it worked perfectly. Town through the ball away a million times, couldn’t clear effectively and was often caught standing around and watching while an attackman drove from behind the cage and got doubled.

Look, Yorktown is good, but Melville is the rare team that doesn’t beat them by overpowering them offensively. Melville beats them with a system of defense, focus and intensity.

Losing this game will hurt for a while, but Yorktown will bounce back.

I think more than anything else, Town has to move the ball better on offense and rely less on isos from up top and one the wings. They have all but abandoned any notion of cutters and instead are driving and either shooting or dumping off.

That won’t work against guys who know how to play good positional defense.

  70. LAX says:

And you’re right Nisky hardly graduated anyone from last year.

  71. slacrosse says:

    Laxman,

Agree that errant pass that led to a goal at 6-5 was a cruncher!

Particularly against the very best teams Town’s GOT to find a way to get the other guys truly productive on top of what JR and KI can do as they will be held to a lower production. Thought Casey had some good play but also got stuck more then once bulling into the goal with 2-3 WM guys around him with no chance to score. Also giving elite teams all that possession on FO’s is a real problem but at this point little late to develop a FO guy. Hope they can improve this in some way!

  72. slacrosse says:

    Good effort Jay w/o Stewart.

Something is very wrong with HG’s defense. Thought they had more then decent supporters for Katches/Litwak but I guess not.

  73. laxfan says:

any score with rye and new fairfield

  74. slacrosse says:

    13-7 New Fairfield over Rye

  75. Dinder says:

looks like haggarty got lit up tonight

  76. laxfan42 says:

Longo got pulled at half time, only let one goal for first half. Jordon Devito did a good job in 2nd half allowed two goals. Haggerty was lit up Big time, but he made some good saves

  77. laxfan42 says:

    Joe,

    Somers is 5-2

  78. Dee-up says:

laxman ytown ease up bottom line these are young men – you guys are way to hard on them . It’s one thing if they are not trying but another if they are …they will loose a game from time to time it’s ok they will be back

  79. freelaxer says:

Greely does have to figure out there defense fast as they take on L/P next wednesday which should be real tough. They cannot afford to let up another 16 or so goals. Also heard Litwak may be out for that game because of a penalty/minor fight at the end of the Jay game, confirmation?

  80. ripo says:

yes he is out of the game along with one of jay back ups. Vinny D left his starters in the entire game and got kicked out on a minor pushing fight. This is why you empty your bench when you are getting slaughtered

  81. ct says:

To this writer, Rye is still WAY inconsistent in terms of its intensity during all 48 minutes of a game. I dont know why but that’s the case–period. Losing is never good but at least go down BUSTING your butts for 48 minutes! This is what strikes me the most, more so then the losses this season, particularly the last two!

Standing around, not picking up ground balls, not using their bodies in front of the goal, walking off/on the field, looking “down”. It was something like 7-1 end of 1 last nite!!. Fortunately some of the “old” intensity came back in the second half with the score ending up a not good but not disastrous 13-7.

I hope the “fire” lights up. These are GREAT KIDS who WANT TO WIN, are USED TO WINNING, WANT TO TRY HARD.

Yeah at this point they deserve to be in the bottom end of the rankings but I’m betting things will turn around.

Dont take the Garnets for granted.

GC losing to a powerhouse like St. Paul of Maryland by just two goals is a good job by them. Won’t be long till the Woodstick Classic!!! Should be a CLASSIC!!!

The less said about Darien’s 9-4 loss to Malverne the better. Darien just does not have the trademark depth they’ve had in the past. This is also a young team and that is evident by some of the mistakes they made Saturday
