The Yorktown lacrosse community lost one of its own today.

Former ‘Husker and Syracuse University star Brian Crockett died early this morning in an automobile accident along I-95 in New Jersey that occurred during heavy thunderstorms. He was 26.

I was actually on my way over to Yorktown around 11:15 this morning when I received the sad news about Brian’s passing. As word spread through town, former coaches and those who played with Brian expressed shock at the tragic news.

Crockett, an attackman, was a third-team all-American for Syracuse in both 2004 and ’05.

The 2001 Yorktown grad is the 10th all-time leading scorer in ‘Husker history with 141 goals and 76 assists for 217 points.

His death is a tragedy on many levels — especially for those who know Brian’s story and how he turned his life around.

This article in Syracuse’s Daily Orange in 2004 details Crockett’s comeback story. The Orange defeated Navy 14-13 in the national championship game that season.

This report has more information on Brian’s passing.

A memorial service is scheduled for Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Bedford Community Church in Bedford Hills. There will be visiting hours on Tuesday from 2 p.m.-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m.at Clark Funeral Home in Yorktown.
