For many teams, the preseason officially ends on Saturday.

And it will end with a bang with some big events and scrimmages set and a few regular-season games as well.

The 29th annual Daniel Hand Jamboree starts at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Hammonasset Beach State Park in Madison, Conn.

Participating teams include Yorktown, Garden City, Northport, Ridgefield, Brien McMahon, Canandaigua, West Genesee, Corning East, Mountain Lakes (N.J.), Ridgewood (N.J.), Duxbury (Mass.), Winchester (Mass.) Medfield (Mass.), Cherry Creek (Co.), and host Daniel Hand.

Yorktown will be playing Cherry Creek (Co.) at 9:30 a.m., Duxbury (Mass.), at noon and Garden City at 2:20 p.m.

Darien hosts a round-robin scrimmage day that will include the No. 3-ranked team in the nation, West Islip, which has eight returning  starters, including the top-ranked junior from sea to shining sea in North Carolina-bound Nicky Galasso. Fairfield Prep and Shoreham-Wading River will also be competing. Action lasts from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The New Fairfield Jamboree includes teams from throughout the Nutmeg State as well as Section 1. Action starts at 8:15 a.m. as New Fairfield meets Brewster and New Milford faces Putnam Valley. Other teams participating include Cheshire, Simsbury, Chesire, Somers, Horace Greeley and Amity.

In another big scrimmage, John Jay visits New Jersey power Delbarton at 11 a.m.

There are some interesting season-opening games in Westchester, Putnam, Rockland and Dutchess too, including Stepinac at New Rochelle (11 a.m.), Mamaroneck at Hen Hud (1 p.m.), Nanuet at Suffern (7 p.m.) and Nyack at Clarkstown South (8 p.m.).

In Nassau, Manhasset hosts South Side at 2:30 p.m.

Here is some breaking news on the Daniel Hand tournament.

Because of the snowstorm that battered the Midwest, Cherry Creek of Colorado has pulled out of the Daniel Hand tournament tomorrow.

Cherry Creek was scheduled to be Yorktown’s first opponent of the day — at 9:30 a.m.

So … the ‘Huskers will instead be playing Ridgefield, which is coached by a pair of former Yorktown greats: Roy Colsey and Don Connolly.

    Should be very interesting.

We may not see a John Fennessy vs. Matt White matchup however. Fennessy, a Towson-bound defenseman, is suffering from shin splints, so his status is uncertain. White, of course, is the star attackman regarded by some as the best player in the region. He’s committed to Virginia.

    Great info Joe.

You continue to be da man!

    Good stuff Joe, but……

I’m hoping Fennessy has shin splints because if he is sitting out with chin splits that would be a little disappointing ……

not one to pick on typos but this one worked out funny enough, at least i think its a typo, is there such a thing as chin splints ?

    Hey Joe
Any chance of a webcast deal like the Varsity Central show ?? it was a great program you guys had going, Did that show go year round? or was it only football??

  9. Laximus says:

Too bad about Fenn missing scrimmage tomorrow. Would’ve been a great matchup vs Ridgefield’s Matt White. Joe your amazing the info you get.

Joe – what do u know about Section 2’s Ballston Spa? I see they are at Fox Lane on Saturday. I seem to remember them playing Niskayuna fairly tough last season. Thank you.
