It now looks almost certain that the Empire State Games will be back in 2013.

The Empire State Sports Foundation Board of Governors announced on Thursday that the Games are on track to resume as part of a new model based on private funding. The summer games are set for Rochester July 24-28, preceded by the Feb. 7-10 winter games in Lake Place.

Of course, this is big news when it comes to lacrosse as the ESG Games were the major summer recruiting showcase event during much of its 33-year history.

It has not yet been decided all of the sports that will be offered, but lacrosse on the initial list, along with beach volleyball, men’s slow-pitch softball and a fitness challenge.

In a major development, the open division will be combined with the Masters division. There will still be a scholastic division, with only athletes competing in that division being housed in dorms during the Games.

The Games were suspended the last two years because of budget cuts.

A website for the 2013 ESG Summer Games has been launched.

Here’s a year-by-year look back at the history of the scholastic men’s lax competition at the Games, starting in the summer of 1984, when the sport was launched.
