During our recap of the Maverik Showtime Lacrosse National Recruiting Spotlight all-star game in July, we had high praise for Chandler Kirby.

The junior defenseman/long-stick midfielder at Jericho High School on Long Island was labeled ‘an intriguing prospect. He has good athleticism, instincts and is very coachable and hard-working.”

Plenty of Division I coaches felt the same way.

Kirby has given a verbal commitment to Cornell.

The 5-foot-7, 160-pound lefty uses his speed and quickness to get to a lot of groundballs.

Now, here’s a Q&A with Chandler on his commitment:

What were the main factors in your decision?
Cornell is an incredible school and I wanted to find a school that would give me a challenge academically and athletically. Also, living in New York, I can attend a Land Grant school which definitely helped out with the finances.

When I went to visit overnight, I felt extremely close with the guys and I couldn’t stop thinking about Cornell once I left.

What other schools were you considering and what schools did you visit?
I went to visit Army, Penn, Michigan and Brown and I also considered Fairfield as well.

What are your strengths as a player and how would you describe your style of play?
I love to get after it. I feel as if my size doesn’t matter that much and I don’t let it hinder my confidence on the field. I feel as if my transition game is pretty solid along with my groundball game. When I touch that field, I will give it my all.

What areas of your game do you think you need to improve on?
I definitely need to improve on my stamina and I can always improve in all aspects of my game. I’m only a junior in high school, so I’m hoping I haven’t reached my peak just yet.

When did you first realize you had the potential to play at the college level?
When I started to play for For the Love of the Game, that was definitely a confidence booster. Then, as I played with the older kids in certain tournaments and heard about their commitments, I definitely realized that college ball was definitely an option.

What were some of the big summer showcase events you’ve competed in the last couple of years and how did you do at them?
The past two years have been all about recruiting. I went to Maverik two years in a row and this past year made the all-star team. This summer I attended Hotbeds and made the all-star team there. I also attended the Brine Shootout, Rutgers MVP, Tri-state and I competed in the Long Island Nassau- Suffolk lacrosse game two years in a row.

Last year, I went to many of the same tournaments, plus UMass and the U-15 National Championship where I was on the all-tournament team.
