Can we talk for a second?

In private.

Actually, I should say, about privates.

Because today’s slate is headlined by a private school showdown between host Brunswick of Greenwich, the No. 10 team in the LaxLessons.com Top 25 regional rankings, and New Jersey power Lawrenceville, which is coming off a 12-11 win over the No. 5 team in the rankings, Ridgefield.

Also in Fairfield, Ridgefield, coming off the Lawrenceville setback (its first loss of the season), hosts Westhill at 6 p.m. at Tiger Hollow Stadium.

The slate on Long Island is highlighted by a 7 p.m. game between the No. 2-ranked team in the LaxLessons.com Top 25, Manhasset, and Seaford (8-3).

In Section 1, action gets under way today in the 27th Eliot M. Stark tournament at Croton. The host Tigers play rival Hastings on Spencer Field. Peekskill faces Albertus Magnus on Manes Field. The championship game is tomorrow at 2 p.m., preceded by the consolation game at noon.

Predictions

Brunswick 9, Lawrenceville 7

  1. Cards Lax says:

I think Westhill Ridgefield may be closer than that. Westhill has a couple of offensive threats. I think it may be higher scoring in general. 17-9?

I’ve seen Brunswick and Ridgefield play a couple of times this year. Brunswick is a more balanced team. I would be shocked if they didn’t win by more than 2-3.

  2. James says:

    Cards –

I don’t see that happening. Wilton routed Westhill 21-2. If the Vikings are going to hang with any powerhouse, it’ll be with a team that has struggled offensively, like Greenwich or New Canaan.

Ridgefield dusts them, 20-5. Brunswick-Lawrenceville could be interesting.

  3. Croton Fan says:

Joe, thanks for including our tournament. We do have good rivalries with Hastings and Peekskill. I know we’re not Yorktown or Somers but it’s nice to have our day in the sun – literally too I hope. Thanks again Joe, this site is just tremendous.

  4. Joe Lombardi says:

    Thanks, Croton Fan.

By the way, tomorrow, the LaxLessons.com crew will on hand for Briarcliff Lax Day, featuring the Bears’ boys and girls teams vs. rival Pleasantville.

The JV games begin at 11 a.m. The varsity girls game is at 1 p.m., followed by the varsity boys game at 2:30 p.m.

  5. Joe Lombardi says:

Also of note today, the CHSAA playoffs get under way today as rivals Fordham Prep and Iona Prep square off. The way the playoffs are structured, the teams could actually meet again on Monday.

  6. GaelWins says:

Possibility of playing Fordham twice is definately interesting. I mean we beat them pretty easily but Moffa is a great goalie and Connor Brown is a sick athlete.

  7. GreenWhite says:

Looking ahead to Town-Chaminade tomorrow, I know St. Ant’s handled Chaminade easily but I really hope Town isn’t overconfident. But I still see Town winning by 3 or 4 goals. What does everyone think?

  8. kip says:

In Farifield County, I think there are several schools that are lying in waiting to strike, #1 on that list is Darien. They played several out of conference teams that match them in parity but there seems to be a vast gap between the top 5 and the top 10 teams. Fairfield Prep is also another school that should not be underestimated as well.

Why are they underestimated? Non conference losses. FP played several non conference teams. When you look at other schools in the top 10 of the county, few do. Rather they take on speed bump programs because they can. None of the top 10 programs should be playing any of the relatively new teams to the league. It’s wrong to schedule this way and many of the LI, MD and Upstate NY divs don’t have this. They have sub conferences and divisions in the correct category. Lacrosse in CT needs to follow this. Class S, Class M, and Class L mean nothing to this sport right now.

Lastly, some schools have benefited from early season team strength but its where you finish at the end of the season that matters. Avon Old Farms beat Brunswick earlier this week at 13-9. St Joes came off really strong as well but has lost to Wilton and New Canaan, two teams you have to beat to be #1 in CT.

  9. James says:

kip – Prep has been underestimated not because of quality losses (St. A’s, Chami and Delby), but because of dreadful wins. 11-8 over Guilford and 12-11, in overtime, against Glastonbury? Seriously?

Regular season inconsistency is merely par for the course at Prep. They’ve had some truly inexplicable losses through the years.

  10. sec1 says:

Just watched Lawrenceville vs Brunswick game, 9-8 Lawrenceville scored with 11 sec to go up, it was 2-2 after 1st, 6-5 LV at half 8-6 LV after 3rd. Both good teams goalie on LV very good, Town Would beat both.

  11. GaelWins says:

    IONA 10,
    FORDHAM PREP 7

  12. HVLax says:

Just curious why you think Town would beat Brunswick and Lawrenceville? What areas does Town have the advantage? Just curious. Thanks for the info on the game.

  13. Syracuse says:

Final: Ridgefield 20, Westhill 6 … It was 16-1 Ridge at the half.

  14. sec1 says:

HV good Q not that easy to answer on one game, but I will try, lets start in goal Mike B is much better than Bruns goalie and I would give slight edge to LV goalie. On D pretty equal Brun and LV both teams had a few good long poles, D middies not great, LSM on LV very good and also on Bruns, I think as a whole Towns starting D is better, also neither Team clears that well, LV is better because of Goalie, also Bruns long sticks when they get in trouble like to throw the ball behind there back forward blind, which turned into fast breaks for LV it looks planed but that would never happen with Town’s D.. F/O LV was better but I think it would be pretty equal with Town, now to the O I think in close games the big player get it done, both teams had some, but there is no way in a close game they were shutting down Ranagan or Interliccio who in my op were better then their best players. And just a gut feeling, also with PG schools, how about if Rocky, Kurpis and John Froats were still playing in their 5th yr? NO CONTEST.

  15. spectator says:

for the record, Lawrenceville has PG’s , as do most of the top New England teams, but Brunswick does not. Major reason their league is ridiculously good and deep:you have good teams that then add 5-10 PG’s, most of whom were studs at big time high schools who are getting one extra year of seasoning before they go off to play in college. Deerfield, Salisbury, Westminster, Avon Old Farms , etc. send DOZENS of kids a year to D1 lacrosse. Makes Brunswick’s performance against all these teams quite impressive.

    Who gives a rats

  17. heelslax82 says:

wow, i wonder if sec1 is a town fan…just for the record, i went to the melville-town game and interlicchio was completely shutdown by melvilles top pole (i believe hes a junior, and i heard hes committed to duke, any truth in this?)…yorktown, in my opinion, is a very good team, but can sometimes be very, very overhyped.

  18. sec1 says:

heelslax82, yes he is a jr and he is going to Hopkins, WM not one of his better games he only had 2.. ST Anthonys not a bad team? KI put in 8, and today he had 4 and 1 plus the game winner in OT againts Chaminade. Also if you are talking about Town this yr you have the right to your Op, but if you are talking about there history you are Wrong.

  19. heelslax82 says:

I knew Interlicchio was committed to hopkins, but i meant the pole who was covering him in the WM game…he did a hell of a job denying Interlicchio and shutting him down when he did get the ball.

  20. sec1 says:

Heelslax82 sorry should have read the Q better, the only pole that I know going D1 on WM is Pat Day who is going to Army, also St Anthonys pole covering him who gave up 8 is going to Towson.. In the case of KI if you were to see more games I think you would have a Diff Op.
