A couple of big showdowns in Suffolk. Some crucial games involving teams from Westchester, Rockland and Putnam.

It should be an interesting Thursday throughout the region today.

In that game, Greeley, which fell behind 7-1 in the first quarter, rallied to pull within 8-6.

In another 4:30 p.m. game, Rockland rivals North Rockland and Clarkstown South square off.

  1. Joe Lombardi says:

    Hey gang –

This came up (from slacrosse) on one of the other threads.

Jim Stout from MaxPreps.com just passed along the schedule for Saturday’s New Fairfield tournament. Nice mix of schools from LI, Westchester and Connecticut:

Noon: New Milford vs Willliam Floyd

    3 p.m.: Plainedge vs Cheshire

7:30 p.m.: New Fairfield vs Rye

  2. SirLaxalot says:

Good field of teams … Thanks for the info Joe and Jim. I may just have to trek up there and make a day of it. Any good restaurants in that vicinty?

  3. What says:

    Joe,

What are your thoughts on the Nrock-south game

  4. laxtime33 says:

Yorktown moves up to #6 in the country while West Islip stays at #2

  5. Joe Lombardi says:

    What –
South is off to a 4-0 start and has already beaten Brewster out of the power league, with a game coming up against Somers that could be interesting. North Rockland, which has swept Rockland teams the last two years, appears to be rebuilding this year. Call it a hunch, but I’m going to go with South 6-5, behind the goaltending of Luke Haggerty.

BTW – Haggerty is in a neck-and-neck race with Yorktown’s Michael Bonitatibus in our latest poll for region’s best goalie. As I write this, Luke leads by two votes. Be sure to exercise your right to vote and weigh in ASAP in what promises to be a down-to-the-wire race.

  6. Joe Lombardi says:

    laxtime33 –
Also of note in the latest Under Armour/Inside Lacrosse rankings, Rocky Point moves into the Top 25 and Darien drops out for the first time this season.

    Here’s the link:
    http://www.insidelacrosse.com/page.cfm?pagerid=65840&cat=197317&hidecontent=yes&id=205028

  7. Somers fan says:

Haggerty is an amazing goalie but if somers dosent put 20 in the back of the net I will be shocked.

  8. Laximus says:

20 yeh ok. Somers offence will be lucky to get 5 gs today vs. Nasty Greeley D.

    Greeley 9
    Somers 4

  9. Syracuse says:

If you have a “nasty” defense you can’t be allowing 16 goals in a game to anyone, including Yorktown, so you may want to rethink that statement. “Good” D? OK. But let’s not go any further than that. I will agree, however, that the kid Katchis is elite.

    Somers wins today, 11-9

  10. slacrosse says:

St. Andrews (Fla) # 10 but Darien drops out because they lost by 1 goal to Sett!

But still, SA DID beat the powers, Pope John Paul 23-0, St.thomas Aquinas 25-1 and still to play the power, Gullivers Prep–I get it

  11. Laximus says:

I’m not a Greeley fan by the way. Kust sayin what’s gonna happen. Katchis will hold JoJo to 0-2.

  12. slacrosse says:

    Cuse,

Agree with all but I’d add that Litwak is the real deal as well.

  13. Somers fan says:

I was talking about when Somers plays south, somers should have 20+ goals.

  14. Lax Novice says:

Only a matter of time before Darien is back in the IL rankings, plenty of lacrosse yet to be played.

Dropping out of the Lax with Joe rankings, now THAT would be upsetting!

I like Darien by 3 vs Malvern Prep this Saturday, another big showcase for HS lax in the East down in Haverford PA.

  15. WarriorLax says:

Yeh no chance Darien will drop outta Lax with Joe Top 25. They will always be a Top 10 team in this region. But they are not nearly as strong as last year. The loss of Nikki Dysenchuk is a devastating one. Let’s face it Ridgefield has to be the favorite this year.

  16. TheRock says:

With Suffern down, South vs. NR is definately the game of the year in Rockland. I agree wit Joe … Should be a one goal game. I give edge to NR but we’ll see. 4hould be a great one wit a huge fired up crowd and all.

  17. Pequa says:

Good call on RP-‘Wogue Joe. RP may be nationally ranked by ‘Wogue has more depth/firepower.

  18. John Bastowe says:

Somers destroyed Greeley. The final score was 15-8. Somers did play very well and took advantage of a sloppy Greeley squad.

  19. Pinder says:

    Any updates on Nrock-south game

  20. Hitu says:

So is somers next victim eh.

  21. lacrosse says:

    final

    south 8
    NR 4

  22. syracuse says:

    Finals of note:

    Somers 15, Greeley 7
    Rocky Point 8, Comsewogue 7
    SWR 13, Huntington 3
    Chaminade 17, St. Dominic 0
    Plainedge 10, Baldwin 7

The rest we’ll update in the body copy of this post.

  23. Joe Lombardi says:

Just got an update from John Jay coach Nick Savastano on the status of senior midfielder Will Stewart, who reaggrevated a shoulder injury in Tuesday’s 10-7 loss to Somers.

An MRI revealed that he does have a partial tear in his shoulder.

“Best case is he rehabs it and might be back for our Lakeland/Panas game in a week and a half (on April 28),” Savastano said.

It’s sure been a wild season in Class B. I’ll be weighing in with some thoughts on that — and Somers’ surprisingly one-sided win at Greeley today — in a bit. So be sure to check back for that.

  24. Section1 says:

It says somers plays clarkstown south next on sat. 18-3 somers.

  25. tizo says:

Somers is unstoppable they will win states this year- you can take that to the bank.

  26. tizo says:

joe any updates on the lakeland v. brewster game???

  27. syracuse says:

Somers is not winning states this year. And believe me when I say I’d love to see them do it. But they aren’t beating Niskayuna, Garden City/Rocky Point and Corning East in five days.

    Not happenin’.

  28. Section1 says:

every kid is gunna score on somers next game ha

  29. pacfan says:

you do realize that haggarty is the goalie for south right? He’s the best in the section by far this season.

  30. Somers fan says:

    19-4 Somers

  31. Joe Lombardi says:

Lakeland/Panas just wrapped up a 7-4 win over Brewster.

Next up for the Rebels: Iona Prep on Saturday.

  32. SOMERSSS says:

    Joe
How bad you think somers should beat south in the upcoming game to establish themselves.
    16-5 somers

  33. Joe Lombardi says:

It stands to reason Somers might beat South by a similar margin to the Greeley score, as you predict, but I don’t think so.

This could be a trap game for the Tuskers, who are coming off a stretch of tough tests against Yorktown, Cold Spring Harbor, John Jay and Horace Greeley and who await a showdown against Ridgefield next Saturday, April 25. (I understand Ridgefield is very much awaiting it too, as the the Tigers have been scouting Somers extensively. This is clearly a big statement-type game for both programs.)

I have a feeling, though, Somers-South may be closer than you may think. First, South is a solid squad. I predicted the Vikings would beat North Rockland tonight and they did. Now they’re 5-0.

Clarkstown South also, of course, has one of the best goalies in the region in Bridgton Academy-bound Luke Haggerty.

Yes, Somers is a big favorite, but I’m not expecting a rout by any stretch.

  34. SWLAX says:

    Joe-
You keep saying South in undefeated, they’re not, they lost to B’Ville 13-6…

  35. lax - ref says:

Hey – SYRACUSE – plenty of good resturants in the NF area. What are you looking for ?

  36. laxfan42 says:

    Joe

Longo had 15 saves tonight – they pulled him after 3rd quarter in the greeley game – funny if it was a goalie duel – kind of like a ptiching duel

  37. Joe Lombardi says:

New Fairfield does have its pick of good restaurants – many in Danbury and Brookfield, actually, which border it.

    SWLAX –
I stand corrected. Actually, I’m sitting, but you get the idea.

    laxfan42 –
Yes indeed. Jordan DeVito took over in goal in the fourth quarter in relief of Chris Longo for the Tuskers.

  38. syracuse says:

    Lax-Ref,

Bro explain what you mean. NF area is where exactly? Sorry man, I’m seeing double right now.

  39. ??? says:

I think you guys got the Greeley score wrong. it was 15-8 im pretty sure. the scoreboard got messed up, did you check the books?

  40. Foxes99 says:

??? – Are you serious? 15-7 or 15-8? Honestly who cares? Get some semblance of a life!

  41. lax - ref says:

syracuse – right in the middle of NF there is a NF Bar & Grill. Right in Brewster you have a couple of Irish joints ( O’Connors, Tom & Jerry’s also Kelly’s ), if you are looking for something nice, surf & turf, down the road from the NFHS in Danbury ( 5-10 min ) in Jim Barbarie’s Resturant.

  42. casual observer says:

    joe,
sorry i didnt get a chance to share my thoughts on the IP-FP game sooner.
before i start let me just state right here that chris moffa is a STUD. he kept it close in the firsthalf doing everything he could making some great saves. also i liked the way iona prep responded after a tough game vs rye. being close early was a shock to most(it was 5-4 (i think) at the half) but people don’t understand the intensity that fordham brings which allows them to sometimes play beyond what we all feel is thier true potential. however, iona prep didnt panic. they hung in there and kept working thier gameplan and it worked great. a nice job by both teams coming out with high energy but in the end iona prep just has to many horses in the stable. im hoping to get out of a family party(who really likes thier in-laws anyway) and be able to check out the game vs. LP on sat. if iona prep comes out like they did vs rye it will be a blowout by halftime but if they play the way they did today(patient on O, high energy on D, as a team on both sides of the ball) they can certiantly show that the rye game was a fluke.

  43. slacrosse says:

To Will Stewart–Sorry bout that freak accident. Get better real soon.

Picked Somers to beat HG but surprised by margin of win.

  44. Joe Lombardi says:

    CO –

Good info on Iona-Fordham game. Thanks.

Tomorrow’s game vs. LP should be a good one, maybe as dramatic as last year. Let’s hear everyone’s picks. Game is at 1:30 at Iona. Let’s.get some other picks for tomorrow too, including Ytown-WM.

  45. casual observer says:

its tough to pick a winner because IP can play very very well(don bosco, fordham, st. john the baptist(soild teams not great but solid) JJ scrimmage) and can play poorly(rye). im going to go with my gut and say coach T wont let the poor effort vs rye happen again and neither will those 4 D-1 srs. im taking IP in a game as close(its just not possible to be closer) as last years.
I also like town playing at home. I really think this is thier year and apparently some of the IL/UA poll voters agree. im going town by 2.

  46. syracuse says:

Ah Lax-Ref I get you now.

Cool info man. Surf ‘n turf is always good.
