A total of eight former Section 1 players — five from Marist and three from Fairfield — were involved in today’s game in Poughkeepsie as Fairfield pulled out an 8-6 victory.

The Marist contingent is comprised of Yorktown products Ryan Penner (senior goaltender) and Paul Santavicca (senior midfielder) and Brewster grads James Taylor (senior defenseman), Tim Capalbo (junior defenseman) and Zach Badalucco (freshman defenseman).

The Fairfield trio is made up of Yorktown’s Gary Raniolo (senior midfielder), Lakeland/Panas’ Billy Honovich (senior defenseman) and Somers’ Matt Petre (senior defenseman).

To make things even more interesting, Penner and Raniolo are cousins.

And in case you’re wondering, Penner did have a shot on goal, and Penner made the save — one of 10 he made on the day.

After Marist rallied to tie it at 5-5 with 7:33 remaining in the third quarter, Fairfield reeled off three straight goals to go ahead 8-5 in the St. Patrick’s Day showdown.

There are also plenty of players on both teams, of course, from Long Island and Fairfield.
