We have some sad news to report.

Ann Bates, the wife of Princeton University head men’s lacrosse coach Chris Bates, died today at age 43 after a long battle with cancer.

Chris Bates, a 1986 John Jay High School graduate, took over as the Tigers’ coach in June 2009 after a successful tenure at Drexel.

Ann Bates was first diagnosed with brain cancer in 2003.

“She was the most courageous, inspirational person I ever met,” Chris Bates said in a press release issued by Princeton tonight. “She hit every challenge head on. She was really just an inspiration.”

Ann Bates, who was a medical doctor, performed  her residency in pediatrics at North Caroilna, where she met Chris Bates, who attended graduate school there.

Arrangements for memorial services have not yet been set.

I know the entire lacrosse community joins me in extending our condolences and deepest sympathies to Chris Bates, the Bates’ 10-year-old son Nicholas, the entire Bates family and the entire Princeton lacrosse community.
