Ryan Walsh is pretty busy these days. The senior is a middle linebacker, tight end and long-snap center on punts for Wantagh’s football team who was the defensive MVP of last year’s Nassau County finals.

But his collegiate future is in lacrosse.

Walsh, a 6-foot-4 attackman who was the seventh-leading scorer in the county last year, has committed to Colgate.

By playing at the D-I level, Walsh is continuing a family tradition.

His cousin, Pat Walsh, also an attackman at Wantagh, was a three-time all-American at Notre Dame.

Here are Ryan’s thoughts on his commitment to Colgate:

What were the main factors in your decision?
The commitment that coach Nagle showed in me from the first day of the recruiting process. Colgate also offers great academic opportunities that will have a great impact on my future.

What other schools were you considering and what schools did you visit?
Loyola, Stony Brook and Notre Dame. I visited all three and Colgate.

What adjustments do you think you will need to make to play at the next level?
To be a Division I player, I’m going to have to adjust to the speed of the game and make quicker decisions.

What are your strengths as a player and how would you describe your style of play?
Being 6-4 and 210 pounds definitely helps me power through people but I am also very athletic and have very good stick skills. I like to make other players around me better and can do any offensive role asked of me.

What players have you looked up to as you have moved up through the varsity ranks?
My cousin Pat Walsh, who was a three-time all-American at Notre Dame and a member of the U19 USA Team. He was also a nominee for the Tewaaraton trophy.

When did you first realize you had the potential to play at the D-I level?
When I was a little kid because I always played with older kids. My brother, who is six years older than me, always let me play with his friends and they would push me to become a better play. I worked hard so that I could be one of the better kids even when I played up a few age groups and that drove me to keep working hard to become a Division I player.
