Smithtown West has emerged as one of the powerhouse programs in the nation’s No. 1 hotbed for lacrosse, the New York/New Jersey/Connecticut tristate region.

The Bulls, coming off a 16-3 season that ended with a loss to eventual New York state champion Ward Melville in the Suffolk County Class A title game, have won 15 or more games each of the last three season.

Look for West to once again enjoy similar success in 2014.

For our first look at Smithtown West heading into the season, we check in with University of North Carolina-bound senior defenseman Kyle Mathie.

playerperspectiveNow, here are Kyle’s perspectives on the upcoming season.

What have you been doing to get ready for the season?
In preparation for this season, I have been working on my strength. I have been at the gym everyday working to make myself the best I can be for my senior season. This season means a lot to our seniors and I want to make sure I make a big impact on this season.

How does your schedule look, what games are you looking forward to most, and who are some of your scrimmages against?
Honestly, I don’t really focus on the schedule that much. Obviously you have your big games and exciting match ups but we have to take one game at a time to ensure our last game is a victory.

What players on your team do you think will surprise some people this season?
I’m looking forward to seeing a lot of players shine this year. Returning starters (Christian) Zawadzki at midfield, (Ryan) Keenan at attack, (Logan) Greco on defense and (Matt) Smidt  in goal will obviously make this season special. I am looking forward to seeing names like (Matt) Heldberg, (JJ) Foley, (Sean) Adler, (Alex) DiSalvo, and (Danny) Varello to have a big year.

What do you think the strength of your team will be this year?
I think this year’s team returns a great defense. We have a full senior defense with a lot of varsity experience. This team is a special one and I am looking forward to seeing it all come together in March.

How do you view the race in your league and who do you think some of the contending teams will be?
This league is a special one. Every team is a contender and I believe Northport and Ward Melville will be strong this year. They’re going to have to play a very strong Smithtown West group though.
