The Simsbury, Conn.-based Westminster School enjoyed plenty of highlights in 2011.

The Martlets beat Hotchkiss 9-5 in late May to clinch their first Founders League outright title since 1996.

Westminster’s 7-0 league record was highlighted by a double-overtime win over Avon Old Farms.

Will 2012 be another championship season for Westminster?

If that winds up being the case, Alec Dunn will be one of the big reasons why.

The junior defenseman (shown at far left) has verbally committed to Maryland after also considering Georgetown, North Carolina, Yale and Michigan.

Now, let’s get Alec’s take on the upcoming season, and some thoughts on his college future as well, in our latest preseason “Player’s perspective.”

What have you been doing to get ready for the season?
I’m currently doing a strength and conditioning program at Westminster so I will be ready for the season.

How does your schedule look, what games are you looking forward to most, and who are some of your scrimmages against?
Our schedule is looking extremely tough this year. I can’t wait for our games against Deerfield, Salisbury and Brunswick. These games are always our most challenging and will be very exciting to play in this season.

What player or players on your team do you think will surprise some people this season?
I believe Matt Knight, a sophomore at Westminster, will make large contributions to our team right off the bat. I also believe Pat Brandell has the potential to make an impact on our varsity team as a freshman and can become a key part of our program over the next couple years.

How do you view the race in your league and who do you think some of the contending teams will be?
The Founders League is always one of the most competitive leagues in the nation. I believe Avon Old Farms and the Hotchkiss School will be our biggest competition within our league.

What was the recruiting process like and what were the main factors in your decision?
The whole recruiting process was extremely exciting for me and my family. I really enjoyed visiting many different schools but when I visited Maryland I saw that would be the best place for me to spend my college career.

Maryland has a great balance between athletics and academics; with a great coaching staff to help teach and guide me through my college years.

You could argue this league is the best of any around. Interesting to get Alec’s take on Westminster. Look forward to hearing about Salisbury and the others.

I don’t know…I think that Class A in Section 11 and Class B in Section 8 might have something to say about that.

  4. New England Prep Lax says:

Do you really think a freshman and sophomore will be able to produce in such a tough league like founders? Is matt knight or pat brandell looking at college yet? Personally I have seen Alec play and he is a very skilled player and I look forward to playing against him in college.

  5. CT Prep Lacrosse says:

Yes, from inside sources Matt Knight has emerged as a player and has had a lot of interest recently. My guess is he commits before the spring season.

    Interesting info…

  7. If you can read this a westy kid just ran by you says:

In response to New England Prep Lax, of course it is hard to be successful in the Founders League at such a young age, but one thing I can assure you is that your comments have inspired these two kids to prove you wrong.

Best of luck this season Alec!
