As we’ve been telling you, the start of the National Letter of Intent Signing Week is Wednesday.

One regional team that better make sure it has plenty of pens ready to go is Avon Old Farms in Connecticut.

Avon, after all, has no less than seven college-bound seniors, four of whom are headed to D-I programs.

Among them is Marist College-bound Derek Sganga.

Sganga is a talented takeaway longstick midfielder/defender with strong sticks who is very dangerous in transition.

He came to Avon by way of Eastport-South Manor, in Suffolk County.

Here’s a Q&A with Derek on his commitment:

What were the main factors in your decision?
(Marist) Head Coach Keegan Wilkinson. He made me feel important to the program and that I would be able to contribute to the team. The other contributing factors were the location and beauty of the campus as well as having the academic majors that I am intersted in pursuing.

What other schools were you considering and what schools did you visit?
I also considered Robert Morris University, Sacred Heart, SUNY Cortland, Mount St. Mary’s and Air Force. I visited RMU, Sacred Heart and Cortland.

What are your strengths as a player and how would you describe your style of play?
The fact that I’m able to play with both hands equally. I have good stick skills and footwork. My style of play is fast-paced, defensive takeaways and bringing the ball up in transition to be an offensive threat.

What areas of your game do you think you need to improve on?
My ability to shoot on the run more accurately.

When did you first realize you had the potential to play at the college level?
I realized I had the potential to play at the college level was in eighth grade when I was asked to play on the varsity team.

What were some of the big summer showcase events you’ve competed in the last couple of years and how did you do?
Tri-State Laxfest with Team Long Island. We lost in the finals to the Dukes.
