University at Albany-bound defenseman Tyler Fahey and Yorktown host Brewster in the quarterfinal round of the Section 1 Class B playoffs. Yorktown is looking to make the sectional final for the 32nd straight year.

The desired destinations are as follows:

• Suffern Middle School, Thursday, May 26.

• Middletown High School, Thursday, May 26.

• Brien McMahon High School, Friday, May 27.

• Hofstra University, Tuesday, May 31.

• Stony Brook University, Wednesday, June 1.

Those are the sites and dates of the Section 1, Section 9, FCIAC, Section 8 and Section 11 championship games, in that order.

Who will be there?

We’ll have a better idea after today, with a full slate of action in sections 1, 9 and 11 and the FCIAC.

The FCIAC Tournament, which begins and ends in less than a week, starts today at the home fields of the four higher-seeded teams.

Fourth-seeded New Canaan (11-5) hosts No. 5 Wilton (10-6)  in what may be the most highly contested of the games. New Canaan won the teams’ regular-season meeting 10-8.

Also keep an eye on the game between sixth-seeded Brien McMahon and third-seeded Ridgefield — a battle of 12-4 teams. Ridgefield won the regular-season encounter 12-9.

In Section 1, the quarterfinals in classes A and B are today. Class C will be played tomorrow.

The game of the day pits Rye, winners of 11 straight, at fourth-seeded John Jay, the defending Class B sectional champion.

One of these teams will see its string of consecutive sectional title-game appearances end. Rye has made it six years in a row (all in Class C). John Jay has been to seven straight finals (in classes A and B).

John Jay won the teams’ regular-season meeting 10-6. But that was April 5, and Mike Daniello was in action for the Indians. The Hopkins-bound attackman was sidelined for the remainder of the season after re-aggravating a hamstring pull a week and a half after that game.

John Jay coach Tim Schurr told me this week that there’s little chance either Daniello or the Indians’ other injured starters — midfielders Jimmy Morris and Tom Beck — will return to action, even if the Indians play up to the June 11 state title game.

Also of note in Class B, Hen Hud and Somers renew what was once one of the premier rivalries in Section 1. (The teams met four straight years in the Class C sectional final from 2000-04, with Somers winning each year.) This contest features an intriguing game within a game as Hen Hud sophomore Matt Ledwin, one of the section’s premier faceoff specialists, battles Binghamton University-bound senior Anthony Lombardo of Somers.

In Class A, two games should be especially interesting: Mamaroneck vs. Suffern and Lakeland/Panas vs. Arlington.

Suffern (14-2) is the top seed, but Mamaroneck (9-8) is the lone team to beat Bronxville this season, and against mutual opponent North Rockland, Mamaroneck won 10-2 while Suffern won 7-2.

Lakeland/Panas beat Arlington 14-3 early in the season, but Arlington (11-5) finished strong, winning six of its last seven, while the defending sectional champion Rebels (9-8) have dropped four of their last six.

In Suffolk County, we’re flagging the Class B quarterfinal between fifth-seeded Huntington and No. 4 Islip. Huntington won the regular-season meeting 10-7, but Islip is playing at home, as the seeds indicate, and is coming off a 7-6 loss to a Comsewogue team that’s unbeaten. In addition, the Buccaneers beat Shoreham-Wading River during the regular season. Should be a real good one.

Before we get to today’s schedule rundown, just a quick reminder to check in here with score updates from the field today with your mobile devices. You can post them directly as comments on this thread or, if it’s easier, email them to us at info@laxlessons.com.

  1. BigBadBear says:

First off, congrats to the Bears for finishing the season strong, best of luck to all of the seniors, good luck to all teams.

Second, in terms of the debate yesterday on running up the score, I have been on both sides of this. It depends on HOW you get there. If all starters are out, and it’s still early in the game, I have no problem with the second teamer’s trying to score. They deserve to play too. Now if starters are still in the fourth and taking to the cage, that’s not right.

Third, major news in MCLA world, as Michigan loses in their likley last year as a club team, 6 -5 to Arizona State, my pick to go all the way. A mild upset on the other side of the bracket as BYU beats Colardo State.

And on the MCLA D2 side, another upset as Davenport beats Grand Valley State, which feature the ex-leading scorer in NCAA D2, Cam Holding, 16 -15. They will face defending champ, St. Thomas, looking for the 3-peat.

(Note to Joe, Dayton had a nice run, losing to St. Thomas in the quarters.

  2. slacrosse says:

    BBB,

Wonder when Mich will formally announce. Maybe wanted to delay until after their season was done?

    • BigBadBear says:

there is talk that next year will be a “transition” year, and that 2013 will be the first full year…and it looks like John Paul, the current coach, will remain…

  3. slacrosse says:

For anyone that might be interested in Baltimore lacrosse, Gilman upset Calvert Hall 13-8 in the MIAA final last night.

    WP 12 New Ro 9 – FINAL

    • Str8_LAX says:

S-Lax, thanks for the update. Its funny that no one has anything to say about this score. New Ro was supposed to get blown out. “They don’t play any body” people said. Well guess what the supposedly played somebody today and gave them all they could handle. And any body who watched the game will tell you that New Ro would have one the game had it not been for a bad clearing pass and an unfortunate offsides penalty. It was a really good game. Please people, give credit where credits due.

By the way, Andrew Billups scored three today. As I have said before, Remember the name.

    • ReLAX says:

Yeah Boy…now you get somemore Tigers from the East

      • The Boy Who Cried Wolf says:

Now we got the Rebels. Should be a great game and The WBB is looking forward to it…

    • i'm blue da ba dee da ba die says:

      Viva butterflag!

      • The Boy Who Cried Wolf says:

Couldn’t have said it better myself blue. Can’t wait for Monday! It’s gonna be a battle for both teams. Maybe MSGVarsity would want to get to see the rematch of these two considering how good the first matchup was on TV. Just a thought Joe…

        • Joe Lombardi says:

Definitely a good thought – and the 100th comment of the day (the fifth day in the last six we’ve broken that barrier, but who’s counting?)

Seriously though, both LP and Suffern are playing well. The first game was a real good one that LP pulled out 10-9, and the rematch should be every bit as exciting.

          • The Boy Who Cried Wolf says:

Loving the amount of comments on this blog! Good thing you told me about this at the first LP v Suffern game. The WBB would love to see their first publicist at the game Monday and if not then I guess them Suffern boys gotta get a win because the WBB seeks MSGVarsity airtime!

          • Joe Lombardi says:

Definitely. Now that it looks like the world won’t be ending, I can think about where I’ll be Monday. It will one of those days where I try to get to as many games as possible – two, maybe three. Waiting to get all the starting times.

          • The Boy Who Cried Wolf says:

Yeah that was kind of a surprise. I had been blasting R.E.M. all day and then nothing happened…My sources tell me that the Suffern LP game is going to be at 4:30

  26. BigBadBear says:

JJ score not indicative in my view, (sla, I must have beat you home)…they were in control all the way, had they shot a bit better, this game would have been very lopsided. Rye couldn’t clear, just seemed to lack a bit of intensity. Lambert and #22 very good for J, will be a good game with Somers

  27. scooter says:

    Pac score?

  28. ReLAX says:

12-7 UVA got here @ half it was 10-4 six goals too much to make up even w/ Pannell

  29. Joe Lombardi says:

Darien leads Fairfield Ludlowe 9-0 athalftime in the FCIAC quarterfinals.

  30. Joe Lombardi says:

Kevin Cousin scores four minutes into the game. Somers leads Hen Hud 1-0

  31. Joe Lombardi says:

Ash kari from Marasxo 2-0 Somers with four minutes left in the first

  32. Joe Lombardi says:

Ashikari from Marasxo 2-0 Somers with four minutes left in the first

  33. Joe Lombardi says:

    Somers leads 2-0 after 1.

Darien leads Ludlowe 14-3 after three

  34. Joe Lombardi says:

Bertoline from McDermott. 2-1 Somers early in the second

  35. Joe Lombardi says:

McDermott unassisted 2-2 with eight minutes left in the second.

  36. Joe Lombardi says:

Somers goes ahead 3-2 with 7:07 left in the second on a goal by Anthony Carpenter.

  37. Joe Lombardi says:

Bertoline ties it at 3-3 off a feed from McDermott Hen Hud has won five of eight face-offs

  38. Joe Lombardi says:

Cegielski from Rios 4-3 Somerz with four minutes left in the second quarter.

  39. Joe Lombardi says:

Emanuel and Donohue score back to back. Somers has opened up a 6-3 lead

  40. Joe Lombardi says:

Donohue again. 7-3 with 1:30 left in the first half.

  41. laxdog says:

Hate to break it to the New Rochele fan but white plains is still like playing nobody pac will beat them by 8-10 goals AGAIN!! And I’m not even from pac.sufferns in the same boat. Sorry that’s the way I see it

    • The Boy Who Cried Wolf says:

Not sure I understand the part about Suffern. Could you please explain?

    • str8_lax says:

laxdog, I understand your point. The fact of the matter is no one expected the score to be what it was, probably including you. The KIDS from New Ro deserve a more respect than that. I think Pac wins but WP will have a better showing!

    • The Boy Who Cried Wolf says:

Now I understand your comment…Can you say arrogant? Suffern will not be in any boats “dog” so that point is irrelevant

  42. Joe Lombardi says:

To clarify. Class A semis on Monday in Section 1: White Plains at Mahopac and LP at Suffern.

  43. Joe Lombardi says:

Tandy and Emanuel trade goals. Somers leads 8-4 at half.

  44. Joe Lombardi says:

    Final: Darien 17, Ludlowe 1

  45. laxforfun says:

Sounds like Somers went with more of the backups to start the game. Good job by them, most do not get much playing time.

  46. laxdog says:

10-3 town at half just got word

  47. Joe Lombardi says:

Yorktown 9, Brewster 3 at the half.

  48. Joe Lombardi says:

Lombardo unassisted then Ashikari. Somers leads 10-4 with 8:39 left in the third.

  49. Joe Lombardi says:

Emanuel gets his third. 12-5 Somers late in the third.

  50. Old Rugger says:

Slacrosse. What do you think of 18 on JJ. It was great to see JJ play for almost 4 quaters (last 2 minutes a bit sloppy wit the ball) They scored most of their goals in transition and still need to see more scoring and creating in settled situations.
After today I’m changing my AA opinion, Lambert on JJ should be considered he looked to be the best player on the field today. Not Ryes best game too many unforced errors but they have a solid team.

    • slacrosse says:

Yes for the vast majority of the game Jay played very solid.

#18 Lambert looked real good. Also remember thinking I believe #44 Lanza doing a real good job on Barton.

    • jeffreyp says:

im really not just saying this, lambert has been the best player on the field for every single game other than the ytown and manhasset game. hes dominant

  51. Joe Lombardi says:

Taipan Zee beats Nyack 10-8 and will face the Yorktown/Brewster winner in Monday’s semifinal.

  52. Joe Lombardi says:

Emanuel gets his fourth. 13-5 Somers earl yin the fourth.

  53. Joe Lombardi says:

it looks like a John Jay-Somers semifinal on Monday in a rematch of a late-season game won by Somers 9-8. If that is indeed the matchup, the game will be played at 6 p.m., at Somers.

  54. slacrosse says:

Congrats to Jay on their 11-8 win over Rye. The 11-8 score was not reflective of Jay’s dominance today. Good luck to Jay going forward.

Jay dominated all phases of the game (both goalies played well) and seemed particularly tough on Rye in riding, ground balls (think had an advantage in FO). Rye regained some “mo” near the end of the game to score a few goals but could not make up the deficit.

I agree with BigBadBear above. Said Rye lacked intensity. Seemed like
Rye lacked a playing/emotional “edge” which they carried into wins during their previous long winning streak.

Tough day for Rye seniors but they should be proud of their accomplishments not only in lax but in other sports, in the classroom, and Rye community. Feel additional cudos are due for Matt McReddie senior Co-Captain who had 4 goals today and who played the whole season while still coming back from a knee injury.

    • P&G says:

      Slacrosse,

I second you on the Rye seniors accomplishments. Too bad it had to be in the quarter-finals, but they should hold their heads high.

Any thoughts on the Jay players? There had been previous discussions on Lambert and the JJ attack vs. the Rye attack. Was just wondering if your opinions changed after seeing the Jay kids for a 2nd time later in the year.

      • laxman says:

JJ attack caused about 5 turnovers on rides and probably 2 goals off of them, enough said! Hustle and riding win games!

      • slacrosse says:

Not sure bout previous discussions on Jay vs Rye attack but for sure Jay has continued to improve and mesh their players adapting to missing some top players.

Looking at the sideline with Daniello and Morris out had to be impressed that Jay still had the depth to have good numbers of top players on the field.

Lambert looked real strong but really all the Jay kids on O and D were playing well. Jay made very few mistakes throughout the game.

Somers/Jay should be a great game.

  55. Justafan says:

Any other fciac scores out there? Thanks

  56. Joe Lombardi says:

Yorktown leads Brewster 17-6 late in the third.

  57. Joe Lombardi says:

Looks like TZ at Yorktown in the other Class B semi on Monday in a doubleheader with the girls. The starting time will be 7 p.m.

  58. Joe Lombardi says:

Final: Somers 15, Hen Hud 7

    • Joe Lombardi says:

Once again, John Jay plays at Somers on Monday at 6 p.m. in the Section 1 Class B semis.

Some food for thought – as we told you a while back, Hen Hud will be competing in Class C next year. With several key sophomores, including faceoff specialist Matt Ledwin, and even a freshman returning, the Sailors should be an immediate title contender next year.

  59. laxdog says:

Wow yorktown really got the luck of the DRAW!!!

  60. rlaxfamily says:

Anyone with an update on the Hopkins score? thanks.

    • P&G says:

          • Lax Novice says:

Their faceoff man, Dolente, is also a senior I believe, and that was an area in which they improved a great deal this season.

  61. lax4life says:

Nice win by Somers. Good luck vs JJ. And Congratulations to all of the Hen Hud seniors! Thank you for an enjoyable season.

  66. Lax News says:

Seems to me that Somers has turned into a very dangerous team offensively with all this balance. That mixed in with the fact that JJ is playing very well defensively. Monday should be some battle. L/P – Suffern may be very interesting as two teams try to out zone the other. Where to go for fans should be an easy choice, noe need to see Tappan Zee or White Plains get smacked.Good Luck to all!!!!

  67. Joe Lombardi says:

If you’re just tuning in today, here’s a rundown of how the Section 1 semifinals in classes A and B shape up for Monday as a result of today’s results. The Class C quarterfinals in Section 1 will be played tomorrow. The Class C semis will be on Tuesday.

    Monday’s Section 1 semifinals

    Class A

No. 5 Lakeland/Panas at No. 1 Suffern, Tentative time 4:30 p.m., but subject to change
No. 6 White Plains at No. 2 Mahopac, Tentative time 4:30 p.m., but subject to change

Winners meet for the Class A title on Thursday at 3 p.m. at Suffern Middle School

    Class B

    No. 4 John Jay-Cross River at No. 1 Somers, 6 p.m.
No. 6 Tappan Zee at No. 2 Yorktown, 7 p.m.

Winners meet for the Class B title on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. at Suffern Middle School

  68. Lax Novice says:

    Wither New Canaan-Wilton?

    • Young warrior says:

Wilton crushed 12-5…not even that close…great job on face offs by wilton

    • Joe Lombardi says:

Final: Wilton 12, New Canaan 5. Warriors were in control throughout, leading 6-3 at halftime and 3-1 after the first quarter. Wilton has won eight straight.

  69. NYmike says:

    L/P 15 – Suffern 6

    • The Boy Who Cried Wolf says:

NYmike you aren’t a believer? I won’t make a prediction seeing as I didn’t make one for the mamo suffern game but I think everyone knows who I am rooting for!!!

  70. SWLAX says:

Town v. Brewster final from yesterday, anyone?

  71. Purple-Lax says:

Any word on whether Daniello or Morris will be able to play Monday at Somers. I heard they were practicing.

    • Papa John says:

both are done for the year

      • Joe Lombardi says:

As noted here yesterday, there is little, if any, chance Mike Daniello, Jimmy Morris or Tom Beck will return to action even if John Jay plays up to the last possible date this season – the June 11 state championship games in Syracuse.

        • John T says:

Daniello is trying out for the USA team July 7th and wont risk it

          • P&G says:

Stop making something out of nothing. If he was healthy he will play. If he’s healthy he’ll try out. If he’s not healthy he wont’ play or try out.

And I think there is little chance that TOMMY BECK will play – and even less chance that DREW BECK will play given he just finished his sophomore year at Roger Williams!

PG – Switch to decaf. There are more important things to get worked up about. And oh yeah, LOSE THE ALL CAPS!

          • P&G says:

I’m not worked up at all! Sorry if the caps offended you – just trying to clarify which Beck was which!

        • Jaybird says:

All the boys will be missed. Fortunately Tommy has two more years of varsity ball. Mike and Jimmy will have tremendous college careers.

        • JayUpdate says:

Mike Daniello, Jimmy Morris, and Tommy Beck all want to play but just have not been cleared by doctors and trainers. Hard for Mike and Jimmy as seniors and team captains but both have handled the disappointment as well as can be expected. Look at the sidelines and you will see them getting water for players, calling plays, and patting guys on the helmet as they come off the field. There are lots of ways to contribute to a team even when you are not playing.
