It was a relatively light Thursday, but there were some interesting results as updated on our “Gameday Thursday” thread.

Among them:

* Iona Prep, coming off a tough one-goal loss to rival Fordham Prep, held off Rye 10-7.

* Garden City won 14-7 against California’s San Ramon Valley, which next plays on Saturday at John Jay.

* South Side handled Bethpage 9-3.

* Yorktown improved to 2-0 going into Saturday’s game against Shenendehowa by beating upstart Arlington 11-4.

* The first-ever Carmel-Mahopac game in lax was played. Though the Indians, as expected won easily (14-1), the rivalry promises to grow into a big one sooner rather than later.

* Byram Hills continued its strong start by edging Horace Greeley 6-4 while Pleasantville beat rival Briarcliff 7-3.

Now, to today’s schedule.

Headlining the action is the season opener for Lakeland/Panas, which became just the third team to beat Yorktown in the sectional finals since 1979 last year. (In the above photo, the Rebels are shown celebrating that win.) They host Hen Hud at Walter Panas High School in Crompond. L/P has a quick turnaround, returning to action tomorrow with a big game at Suffern.

In Long Island, two-time Class C state champ Manhasset has a 4:30 p.m. game at Malverne and will be off tomorrow, allowing the Indians to scout the Darien/Greenwich game on Saturday. (The Indians play at Darien on May 5.)

In Connecticut, Ridgefield, fresh off a one-goal win at Somers in Northern Westchester, plays at Trumbull.

National power Salisbury, arguably the best team in the Nutmeg state, opens the season with a home game against Berkshire.

Also of interest, Daniel Hand, a team that perennially finishes at or below .500 but opened the season with a one-goal loss to defending state champ Cheshire, plays at Fairfield Prep. If Hand finishes close again, it could potentially have a shot at what could be a breakout season by recent standards.

anyone know the score of the lakeland game?

  2. Bronco Bob says:

    Bronxville 11
    Pelham 2

    McCormick 5-0
    H. Grass 3-0
    J. Grass 2-2
    Near 1-1

    • Laxidazical says:

Ugly game for Pelham. O not aggressive with shots, D beaten left and right. Bronxville great passing near the net with quick release shots on the doorstep that went in almost every time. Talented team.

  3. The Rock says:

    Nyack 16 Cl North 2

  4. Traditions says:

Set 14 Malverne 1 … 4 players with two goals each

  5. maggy says:

    Lakeland beat Hen Hud 13-10

  6. TLax says:

    Mamo 7 Scarsdale 3

  7. slacrosse says:

Wow! I think I can use the word shock to hear that HH scored 10 goals vs LP. Is HH’s O that good or is LP’s D weak, or both? Know about LP’s D but if HH’s O is real strong too, good for them!

  8. Iceman says:

I too am surprised at the LP – HH score. Was anyone there? I would have guessed more of a 12 – win for the rebels

  9. Iceman says:

    12 – 7…oops

  10. scooter says:

I think that it’s safe to say that Class A is 100% up for grabs. There are about 6 teams that could take it.

    • Bp says:

Lakeland looked like it was their first game but will be nowhere near the caliber of last years team. Prunty is ridiculous! Caff very good off ball but not great carrying. Monte had an off game. Was getting smoked on faceoffs. Hen hud easily could have won this game. They had 6 or 7 point black shots on the doorstep, didn’t throw 1 fake and all were saved or hit goalie. Hen hud scraped as usual and has some skilled.players. surprised they lost so bad to wantagh they way they looked today. Fanning is a nice player. Face off guy real solid as well! Nice effort!

      • slacrosse says:

Yeah, now remember that HH’s FO kid was dominant in the Rye scrimmage. Thought Monty was #1 but maybe this kid is?

        • laxtitute says:

The Hen Hud face off guy is sophomore Matt Ledwin. The kid is legit and could be tops in the section by the end of the year. Fanning is a beast. Hud could have won this game if the attack had finished more.

  11. lax says:

L/P had 8 penalties in the game and all were 1 minute with more than half unreleasable. Hen Hud scores 4-5 goals man up. Can’t be in the box for almost an entire quarter and expect to win most of your games. They also outshot Hud 3-1 in the game but didn’t finish a lot of looks early. Should be interesting when they head to Suffern.

    • slacrosse says:

Nice color. Yeah that level of penalties is a killer. Funny, no connection but LP had a reputation in hockey for taking too many penalties! Refs are calling penalties for hits even near the head alot this season!

      • BigBadBear says:

remember, first game of the season for L/P…they are later than most, just give Coach Lindsay a chance, these guys are always tuff

        • underdog says:

starting an entire new defense is going to take time, give credit to the freshman goalie coming up big. l/p played half their potential and still put up 13. just have to work out the kinks.

        • slacrosse says:

          That’s a fact for sure

          • laxchief says:

L/P had a lot of different scores:
            Caffrey-5 goals
            Prunty-3
            Lugere-2
            Vaimberg-1
            Prunty-1
            Monte-1

Both Goalies played well and yes- L/P’s D needs some work. A fine game played by both teams.

  12. jake concavage says:

    rye is looking good.

  13. justlaxin says:

Town won 8 7. Ty Schuldt scored winner with 4 to go. Mabus scored with 5 left to tie. Shen had quirky deflection to go up 7 6. Shen goalie fantastic, going to Cuse some Shen parents said. Obvious why.

  14. just lax says:

If Hen Hud could finish win by 3 goals easy.
