Kieran Donohue has been surrounded by lacrosse almost since birth.

Donohue’s father, Jim, who played at Fox Lane, served as both head coach and assistant coach with Somers.

His brother, Troy, and sister, Morgan, both were standouts for the boys and girls varsity teams, respectively, at Somers.

And now Donohue starts his senior season with the Tuskers after already making a big impact on the varsity level and as a member of the Hudson Valley team at the Empire State Games last summer.

The Siena College-bound Donohue is a talented attackman with good size and a nose for the net.

He hopes to help the Tuskers make their third straight Class B sectional final appearance.

John Jay, of course, reclaimed the title from Somers last year.
Who do you think should be the favorite to win the Section 1 Class B title this coming season?
Be sure to weigh in with your vote in our poll.

On the right panel of this page, just scroll past the “New Comments” and “Popular” tabs and click on “Poll,” and then cast your vote from the choices available, or write in your choice if it’s not listed.

Now, here are Kieran’s perspectives on the season.

What have you been doing to get ready for the season?
I have been in the weight room in my school ever since football season was over, gaining strength and getting faster for the competition this year. Also, when it has snowed, some of my teammates and I have gotten together and played ice hockey to work on our hand/eye cordination and our footwork. On Mondays, we go over our new offense and get used to each other, and on Wednesdays, we are also in the winter league in Brewster to work on our stick stills.

How does your schedule look, including scrimmages, and what games are you looking forward to?
The Red Gray Classic at Somers (a preseason tournament on March 26), which has 10 of the top teams in the area, so I’m definitely looking forward to what other teams have to bring to the table on. In the regular season, I’m looking forward toward Ridgefield since I’ve played with all those guys in SuperStar, as well as Yorktown; Greeley, since they (Greeley) beat us in the playoffs in football; and John Jay, which beat us three times last year , including in the sectional championship game.

What players on your team do you think will surprise some people this season?
I think we have a lot of players that will surprise people in the section, including Anthony Carpenter, who will be playing attack. He has a good lacrosse IQ and sees the field very well. I think Robby Cegielski and Chris Rios will have breakout seasons this year as well. But Anthony Lombardo, an all-state football player, will be the biggest surprise this year because of his hard work and dedication to get to another sectional championship. Also, the defense will be a surprise this season with Eddie Schurr and his brother Kevin. They will have outstanding seasons since they have gotten bigger and faster.

What do you think the strength of your team will be this year?
With out a doubt, the strength of the team this year is our defense. Eddie Schurr, who has been on varsity since eighth grade, will be directing the D along with Matt Dalton at long-stick middie. Both are shutdown defensemen and are very good with handling the ball in their stick. Matthew Cirieco and Kevin Schurr will be on close defense with Eddie, and both have had varsity experience. Also our defensive midfielders, who are Jack Ahearn and Rob Mendoza, are both blue-collar, hard-working defensemen that really represent how hard our team works.

How do you view the race in Section 1 Class B?
I think it will come down to who wants to be crowned the sectional champion the most. There are many teams that I think will be contending for it, like Yorktown, Rye and John Jay, but whoever will want it more will be victorious in White Plains.

I hear there’s a good field of teams in the Red Gray Classic

  10. WHO Dat? says:

Kieran is on the cusp of the end of a great career. Senior captain this spring will lead by example. A lot of people are down on Somers due to the competition and graduation. I would not sleep on this team, different group of seniors this year, much more cohesive then last .Also do not hear mention to the fact they have seriously upgraded on the Asst coach front. Dalton is a very good xxx-ooos guy and will give the offense much more options then in the past. There are also a very good group of young kids on this team that will fill in admirably. Marasco, Couins, Schurr, and Corpolongo, Ashlari will be names that people will hear about. Coach Lew does not get a lot of credit, but I think the circumstances he has been put in his first three years he has been nothing but successful. Good Luck Lew, Brian and the Tusker Nation!!

  11. Black and Yellow says:

Who is in the Red Grey? Nice day the past two years

  12. Lax Guy says:

Don’t know all the teams at Red Gray but I know Yorktown and LP will be in it this year for the first time.

  13. Elephant Man says:

    Good luck vs Iona KD!
