I’m not big on preseason predictions, but I am about to make one with 100 percent certainty.

Ready?

Here goes.

The Manhasset Indians will not win a third straight Class C state championship in 2011.

Why am I so certain, you ask?

Well, as many of you know by now, it’s because Manhasset will be moving up to Class B this season. In fact, it’s been a popular topic, as evidenced by this thread from last month asking, “Who should be the favorite in Section 8 Class B?”

Speaking of that, be sure to weigh in with your vote in our latest poll question. (On the right panel of this page, just scroll past the “New Comments” and “Popular” tabs and click on “Poll,” and then cast your vote from the choices available, or write in your choice if it’s not listed.)

One thing is clear, Manhasset is certain to be right there.

For more on the Indians, we turn to Williams College-bound senior defenseman John Maimone-Medwick.

Here’s his perspective on the season.

What have you been doing to get ready for the season?
Right now, I’m playing basketball for my high school varsity which helps keep me in shape, especially all the running. I still try to work out with weights and lifting as much as possible during the basketball season but it’s a little harder with basketball practice six days a week for two-and-a-half hours. Although I think basketball really helps keep me in shape and it’s a nice changeup from the normal lacrosse exercise routines.

How does your schedule look, including scrimmages, and what games are you looking forward to?
Our regular season schedule is much harder this year since we moved up a class. I think that even though every game should be competitive. It’ll make us much more prepared for the playoffs and for those tough games down the road. We always look foward to the big rivalries — Garden City, Cold Spring Harbor, Chaminade, games like that — even if they’re non-league, they are always great lacrosse games.

What players on your team do you think will surprise some people this season?
One of the biggest things with our team last year was that we were a team. We had great seniors and leaders who knew when to take over a game, but every guy contributed and when we needed someone to step up it seemed like we always came through.

People again think we lost a lot of seniors and that we won’t be the same as last year but I think we’ll work hard to prove people wrong again and show how good of a team we really are. Our senior class this year has great lacrosse players but also great leaders to help our team again.

What do you think the strength of your team will be this year?
Leadership and hard work. Every year there’s new faces and one of the biggest things is getting everyone adjusted and on the same page with the varsity team. Our strength is always that we are a team and we can build upon what we accomplished last year with this upcoming season.

How do you view the race in Section 8 Class B and who do you think the contending teams will be?
People say Manhasset won’t be able to contend in Class B and that we got lucky to be in Class C. Class B is very competitive with teams like Garden City and Wantagh. In-conference is very competitive, but it’s especially competitive when you get out of the county with other teams in the class on Long Island and the rest of New York. There are a lot of great lacrosse teams that could go far. Hopefully we’ll be prepared to go as far as we possibly can and contend for it all.
