There has been much discussion of the growing number of senior John Jay players who have committed to college programs.

With the commitment of speedy Evan Chen to Bates College in Lewiston, Me., the number is now nine.

But there’s also another impressive number.

That’s the No. 12.

And that’s the number of seniors players from the PrimeTime travel team, many of whom also play for John Jay, who have committed.

That includes the 5-foot-11, 168-pound Chen, a two-way midfielder with strong stick skills.

If you check out our “Updated recruiting review and commitment rundown” for new additions each day, you learned of Chen’s commitment earlier this week.

Here’s a Q&A with Evan on his commitment.

What were the main factors in your decision to attend Bates?
Bates is a great academic school with a charming campus. When I overnighted at Bates, I clicked right away with the student body and the lacrosse team. I liked the atmosphere a lot and felt I could spend four years there.

What other schools were you considering and what schools did you visit?
During the college recruiting process, I overnighted at Swarthmore, Colby and Bates, and considered several other schools, including  Bowdoin, Franklin & Marshall, Kenyon, Middlebury,  Stevens Tech and Trinity.

What adjustments do you think you will need to make to play at the next level?
I will need to improve on my offhand, stamina and strength.

What are your strengths as a player and how would you describe your style of play?
My strengths are speed, stick skills, change in direction, pushing transition and being a good two-way midfielder.

What players have you looked up to as you have moved up through the varsity ranks?
As I’ve moved up through the varsity ranks, I’ve looked up to players such as John Cunniffe, the Daniellos, Bocklets, John Carrozza, Nick Hautau and Pete Coluccini.

When did you first realize you had the potential to play at the college level?
I first realized I had potential to play college lacrosse during my junior year when I started receiving letters and e-mail from colleges with incredible lacrosse programs.

  1. Laxtime says:

Good job Evan. Great school! Congrats.

  2. LAXman says:

Wow. Congratulations Evan on a fantastic choice! How many other John Jay kids do you think are bound for college lacrosse? Pray? Duffy? Stewart? Winter? Caviola? It’s very possible they will have the most college lacrosse players out of any JJ class ever.

  3. Salem Shores says:

Very true. A testament to the hard work of the new coaching staff and the tireless efforts of the kids themselves.

  4. north says:

primetime director nick daniello is helping them out.

  5. LAXman says:

The kids I mentioned above plus Feldman, Kass, and Bennett are the only JJ seniors left uncommitted. Don’t know if the whole class will play in college, but ALL of the seniors are great lacrosse players and all had decent PT on varsity. Pretty amazing.

  6. laxerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr says:

Caviola is commited to Endicott, not sure of the other 4 though.

  7. slacrosse says:

Hey congrats to Evan and good to see him joining Rye’s McReddie at Bates next year!

  8. Frenchie says:

    Congrats bro

  9. roundRobin says:

All I heard all spring was how bad this JJ team was…the worst of the decade…they just can’t get it done…they play with no fire…they just aren’t talented enough…who’s laughing now? lol.

Congrats to all the JJ bros.

  10. Laxtime says:

  11. LaurLax says:
