Long Island has not only jumped out to a 2-0 start heading into today’s Day 2 action at the 32nd annual Empire State Games, but has looked good — make that, very good — in doing so.

Is LI a lock for the gold – what would be its fifth straight?

We’ll have a better idea after today’s slate of six games in which each of the six regions plays two games for the second straight day in Buffalo. Though the forecast for today in Buffalo calls for heavy rain, action is expected to go on unless there are thunderstorms.

But before we get to today’s slate, let’s take a look at yesterday’s Day 1 scores:

Long Island 10, Western 4
Long Island 13, Hudson Valley 7
Adirondack 7, Hudson Valley 6
Western 17, New York City 0
Central 14, New York City 6
Central 12, Adirondack 4

Central just beat Western 12-4 … I think HV is gonna upset Western.. Mark my wordsss

  8. Go Green n Gold says:

TJ Foley’s 2nd goal of the game early in the 3rd pulls HV within one of Western… 3-2… Let’s go HV! I feel a rally coming boys!!!

  9. Laximus says:

Western pulls out a 10-7 win over HV. Good spirited effort for HV. They just can’t catch a break starting with Adirondack.

  10. IslandLaxpert says:

Bit of a surprise but it’s early. Central has jumped out to a 3-0 lead over LI in the 1st qtr. True the teams will meet for the gold Sunday so this one is not as big as you may think, but still…

  11. IslandLaxpert says:

Central wins 8-7 in OT. Reading the summary sounds like an amazing game. Should be an unforgettable rematch on Sunday for the gold.

  12. Observer says:

Sounds like a great game. Seems like a big win for Central and it is because it clinches a spot in the gold medal game with a 4-0 record but I’d be shocked – SHOCKED – if Long Island doesn’t take the rematch on Sunday. Thoughts?

  13. Lax n stuff says:

Props to HV for only trailing LI by 2 goals in the 3rd qtr and staying in their other games, losing narrow decisions to Adirondack and Central.

  14. IslandLaxpert says:

Good to see some new names emerge for LI.

  15. Beach Lax says:

Central-LI rematch Sunday should be a classic. LI just has to beat NYC today to make it happen.

  16. Mugwump says:

1-4 is simply not acceptable for the Hudson Valley, a long time lacrosse “hotbed”. I think this years results were a long time in the making. The first blow was dealt by the long term effect of cronyism in the selection process. The second was the expansion of the recruiting circuit, and the emergence of the elite club tournament teams. Here is a radical proposal:

    1. No Try Outs. Have the team picked by a panel of coaches representing each section, plus private schools and preps. Kids earn slot based on entire season of observed play.

    2. Arbitrary limit of no more than 2 players from any team.

    3. Announce team in May, before club tournament team season starts and before kids commit to other elite clubs.

    4. Enter the team in all major tournaments, Brine Shootout, Tri-State etc, so the kids get the same benefits of exposure to college coaches that the elite club teams get.

    5. Hire real coach unaffiliated with HV for season, with no parental involvement.

    6. Parents of selected players foot the bill, with “scholarships” available in cases of financial need.

Maybe this is not perfect but I bet it will work better than the current system, which clearly is not.
