Former John Jay star Chris Daniello scored a career-high four goals as Syracuse pulled away for a 12-7 win over visiting Army in front of 4,432 fans at the Carrier Dome today.

The game had been tied at 5-5 before the Orange went on a 4-0 third-quarter run.

Daniello scored three of his goals in the first half as the Orange led 5-2 at the break. He took six shots on goal for the Orange. Freshman JoJo Marasco, who was scoreless, had three shots on goal. Marasco’s older brother, Matt, a junior defenseman for Army, had one ground ball and caused one turnover.

Stephen Keogh also scored four goals for the Orange (2-0).

Jeremy Boltus led Army (1-2) with two goals and three assists. Tyler Seymour had three goals. Junior goalie Tom Palesky made 21 saves for the Black Knights.

The game was marked by hard hitting and physical play.

“We’ve been physical in the scrimmages,” SU coach John Desko said in the post-game press conference. “We can play that way. When you play an academy team, they’re going to be physical. We knew that coming into the game. We played very well, but we got a couple penalties in retaliation which disappointed me. Other than that we did a pretty good job and no one got hurt.”

It was the first game of a doubleheader at the Dome. Cornell and Hobart are slated to play in the 6 p.m. nightcap.

Army returns to central New York for a game against Cornell on Saturday, March 6 at 3 p.m. Top-ranked Syracuse visits No. 2 Virginia for a 1 p.m. showdown on Sunday, March 7.
