When Garden City players walked off the field after losing to Jamesville-DeWitt 11-5 on June 12 in the Class B state title game at Stony Brook University,  it marked the end of the season.

But not the end of many of those players’ championship hopes.

After all, the nucleus of that Trojans’ team is back this year.

And eager to take the next step.

To make it to the state title game again though, the Trojans must first get out of Nassau.

That’s no easy task — to say the least — considering two-time Class C state champ Manhasset has moved up to Class B for the 2011 season.

In a recent thread, we heard your take on how the Section 8 Class B race shapes up.

In addition, you can also weigh in now by voting in our poll question, “Who do you think should be the favorite to win the Section 8 Class B title?”

To vote, go to the right panel of this page. Then, just scroll past the “New Comments” and “Popular” tabs and click on “Poll,” and then cast your vote from the choices available, or write in your choice if it’s not listed.

The last few weeks, we’ve been getting the perspective of players from both Manhasset and Garden City.

Next up is Harvard University-bound senior defenseman Brian Fisher of Garden City.

Here are his thoughts.

What have you been doing to get ready for the season?
Most guys on the team go to the PAPC, the Professional Athletic Performance Center, where they do speed and agility training with professional personal trainers. Other guys go to their own gym, and some have a one-on-one trainer to work out. I personally go to a gym because I prefer to work out on my own. I tend to get distracted if I work out with a big group.

How does your schedule look, including scrimmages, and what games are you looking forward to?
It’s a tough non-league schedule. We play teams from California, Maryland and Massachusetts. But now that Manhasset is in Class B with us, I’m looking forward to the Woodstick (Classic) much more.

What players on your team do you think will surprise some people this season?
I think that Rob Savage and Brian Coleman, two middies, are going to have big years. I think that they are both going to put up a lot of points. And Tom Gordon, Devin Dwyer and Pat Berkery are going to have great years like they have had in the past.

What do you think the strength of your team will be this year?
I would have to say defense. We have three starting poles returning, and Dan Marino, who is an incredible goalie, is going to help me, Steve Jahelka and JP Burnside out quite a bit.

How do you view the race in Section 8 Class B and who do you think the contending teams will be?
I think it is going to boil down to Manhasset and GC. They’ve got a great team, with a lot of returning players, but hopefully we can beat them in the county championship.

Another All American, Jahelka and Burnside. GC will be on top in 2011. Maybe a National Championship.

  2. KoKo says:

this is their year to do it. if Marino is as good as Fischer is saying, they have no holes on the team

Good to see St.Pauls coming to GC’s turf. Isn’t very rare for MIAA teams to come to NY? Has that ever happened?

Good stuff Brian. Have a great year.

There defense is the best around but in big games they have trouble scoring goals.

GC D is definately sick but they need more offense.
