Brian Brecht spent a season as an assistant coach on the Yorktown varsity lacrosse team.

Though most of the seventh-year Siena College head coach’s current players hadn’t even picked up a lacrosse stick at the time, it did provide the Long Island native and former Springfield College player familiarity with the Hudson Valley region.

That familiarity as been paying off in terms of recruiting.

Just look at some of the members of Brecht’s incoming recruit lacrosse for next season: Lakeland/Panas star Conor Prunty, Somers standout Kieran Donohue, and now, Rye’s Max Bonsall.

A defenseman, the 6-foot-3 Bonsall has the size and athleticism to make an immediate impact at the next level.

Bonsall was a member of the Hudson Valley scholastic men’s lacrosse team at this past summer’s Empire State Games.

Here’s a Q&A with Max on his commitment:

What were the main factors in your decision to attend Siena?
I really liked the size and location of the school along with the great Economics program and the chance to play Division I lacrosse.

What other schools were you considering and what schools did you visit?
Union, Trinity, Washington and Lee, Robert Morris and McGill.

What adjustments do you think you will need to make to play at the next level?
I will need to get my strength and quickness up along with my stick skills.

What are your strengths as a player and how would you describe your style of play?
My strengths are having a good knowledge of the game and using position and stick skills to my advantage.

What players have you looked up to as you have moved up through the varsity ranks?
Donald Keough and Mike Linehan as they were great players and teammates.

When did you first realize you had the potential to play at the college level?
When I was being contacted by coaches after I got pulled up to play varsity as a sophomore.

Congrats to Max and all the other football playing laxers at Rye for the HUGE win yesterday over Harrison. Joe, it was good seeing you at the game.

Well done Max. Your You-tube clips are great and you seem to have a very good grasp of the game. Until now I had never heard of it and after researching the game on the internet I have discovered that they started playing it here in 2005. I’d really like to learn more about the origins and the rules of the game and will follow this up. (Looks a bit like Rugby Hockey to me)
Best wishes for your continued success.
    Dave
