From press release

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Tewaaraton Foundation is pleased to announce a new format for its Legend Awards for 2016. For the first time ever, our former Tewaaraton Trophy winners will help select the winners, and nominations will be taken from fans via social media.

tewaaratonlogoAs a complement to the annual Tewaaraton Trophy presented to the most outstanding men’s and women’s collegiate lacrosse players, the Tewaaraton Legends award is given to one recipient each year who played collegiately prior to 2001 when the first Tewaaraton Award was presented. The Tewaaraton Legends’ performance during their college years would have earned them a Tewaaraton Trophy had the award existed when they played.

This year, nominations will be accepted via social media (@Tewaaraton on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram) before finalists will be narrowed down and given to our list of 25 former Trophy winners for final selection. For the first time, the Tewaaraton Foundation will honor a men’s and women’s Legend Award, at our ceremony for the 16th Annual Tewaaraton Award, presented by Under Armour, June 2, 2016 in Washington, D.C.

“Our mission is to honor both current and past collegiate lacrosse players while celebrating the Native American heritage of this great game so we’re excited in this continued evolution of the Tewaaraton Legend Award,” said Jeff Harvey, chairman of the non-profit Tewaaraton Foundation. “Giving fans a chance to submit nominations and bestowing our former Tewaaraton Trophy winners with the honor of ultimately selecting the Legend awardees are natural next steps as we head into our 16th year of the Tewaaraton Award.”

Votes will be accepted via social media through Nov. 30, and the best – and most popular – nominations will make their way to our Board of Directors and Former Winners for final voting for 2016. The 2016 Tewaaraton Legend winners will be announced at a special reception in New York City on Feb. 23, and honored at our Tewaaraton Award ceremony on June 2.

Jim Brown (Syracuse) was honored with the first Tewaaraton Legends Award in 2011; he was followed by Eamon McEneaney (Cornell) in 2012, Joe Cowan (Johns Hopkins) in 2013, Jimmy Lewis (Navy) in 2014 and Brad Kotz (Syracuse) in 2015. The first Tewaaraton Trophies were awarded in 2001, to Doug Shanahan (Hofstra) and Jen Adams (Maryland).

This year, Maryland senior Taylor Cummings has a chance to become the first-ever winner of three straight Tewaaraton Trophies after winning in 2014 and 2015.
