Jose Boyer had his pick of some of the top college programs in the nation.

One of the top Class of 2017 defenders in the nation, the standout for 2014 New York state champion Yorktown finally decided on Notre Dame, which has become a perennial Final Four participant but which has not had a player from Yorktown on its roster during head coach Kevin Corrigan’s 27-year tenure.

In fact, Boyer is the first male athlete in any sport to commit to Notre Dame in Yorktown’s long and successful varsity sports history, according to Joe Lombardi who first reported Boyer’s verbal on LaxLessons.com’s Lacrosse Insider premium coverage section.

The 5-foot-10, 175-pound Boyer is physically strong and has outstanding speed and stamina. An aggressive and athletic player, Boyer, who also plays LSM, is a groundball machine who excels in transition.

He is coming off a strong summer in which he made the all-star game at the Maverik Showtime National Lacrosse Recruiting Spotlight.

Recruiting abstractNow, here’s a Q&A with Jose on his commitment.

What were the main factors in your decision?
Academically Notre Dame is a top tier school as are all the schools I considered, and throughout the process, I knew I wanted academics to come first.

I also fell in love with the campus from the moment I got there. I felt very comfortable with (Notre Dame Head) Coach (Kevin) Corrigan, (Assistant) Coach (Gerry) Byrne and (Assistant) Coach (Matt) Karweck.

What other schools were you considering and what schools did you visit?
I visited Denver, Johns Hopkins, Yale and Princeton. I was also considering Maryland and Penn State.

Have you decided what academic major you plan to pursue?
Undecided.

jboyertweetWhat are your strengths as a player and how would you describe your style of play?
I believe my speed and size are two of my strengths as a player. I would describe my type of play as fast and up tempo.

What area of your game do you need to work on?
Shooting and getting bigger, faster and stronger are all aspects I must continue to work on.  You can also always improve your stick skills.

How did you get introduced to lacrosse and what other sports have you played?
My uncles all played the sport, so I figured I’d give it a shot. I also play football and I am a member of the track team.

What travel team do you play on what showcase events did you participate in?
I play for the Yorktown Ballers. I participated in Maverik Showtime, Moonlight Showcase, Fab Frosh Showcase.

Any final thoughts and people you want to thank for helping you reach this point?
My family has supported me throughout this entire process and I wouldn’t have been able to achieve my goal without them. I would like to thank (Yorktown Head) Coach (Dave) Marr, (Assistant) Coach (Brendan) Carney, (Assistant) Coach (Rob) Doerr, (Assistant) Coach (Joe) Colarusso,(Assistant) Coach (Dave) Graham and (Assistant) Coach (Adam) Lodewick.

They have helped me become the player I am today and have supported me throughout this recruiting process. I want to thank the people at TFW Mahopac: Bill, John, Zach, Lisa and Sean.

Thank you for always pushing me and getting the most out of me.

Finally, I would like to say thank you to my teammates for making practice fun and pushing me each and every day.

A special thank you to my grandpa who has been my biggest supporter since the day I started playing sports.
