It was a clean sweep for Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference teams in the Connecticut state title-game tripleheader at Brien McMahon High School in Norwalk.

Here’s the rundown.

Class L: Darien 6, Ridgefield 5. The defending Class M state champion Blue Wave won their second straight state title, but first ever in Class M.

IMG_0521The Blue Wave, who trailed 4-2 at the half, held Ridgefield to one second-half goal and answered a 3-0 Ridgefield second-quarter run with a 3-0 run of their own in the third, with Christian Trifone snapping a 4-4 tie off a feed from Colin Minicus with time winding down in the period. Minicus had a goal and two assists during the run.

Darien (20-3)  extended the lead to 6-4 in the fourth when junior defenseman Mark Evanchick scored on a spectacular overhand blast on a fastbreak. Ridgefield (17-6) pulled within a goal when Simon Mathias, who like Evanchick is bound for UPenn, scored off a Brad Alexander feed. Mathias, once again defense by Evanchick, finished with two goals and an assist.

Mark Galione had two goals during Ridgefield’s big third-quarter run.

Minicus had one goal and three assists for Darien. Hudson Hamill had two goals and an assist.

Darien senior Andrew Pugliese won all seven faceoffs in the second half after the teams were tied 4-4 in draws at the half.

Evanchick, Rock Stewart, Daniel Traver, Will Simpson, Robbie Arrix, Peter Doering, Nic Tuzinkiewicz, Jon Sommi and sophomore goalie Ryan Cornell (11 saves) all excelled on defense for Darien.

Darien is 11-1 in CIAC finals, with a 7-0 mark in Class M (2006-10, 2012, 2014) and 3-1 in Division I (1997, 2000, 2005, with the loss to Wilton in 1999). Ridgefield is now 1-3 in Class L state finals, with the title coming in 2011. Ridgefield won the Division II championships in 2001.

Class M: New Canaan 10, Daniel Hand 5. The Rams won a state championship for the first time since 2003. New Canaan had lost in five state finals since 2003 (with all the losses coming against Darien or Wilton).

Georgetown University-bound Justin Meichner had four goals and one assist, with the three goals coming in the first half. Ryan O’Connell had one goal and four assists and Peter Swindell had two goals. New Canaan also got strong play from goaltender Drew Morris (12 saves) and a dominant second half on faceoffs by Teddy Dumbauld.

CT Class S: St. Joseph 14, Weston 5. The Cadets won their second straight title in their third straight state title game.

Senior Preston Ouellette scored four goals, with three coming in the first half, for St. Joseph, which extended a 2-0 lead after the first quarter to 6-1 at the half.

It was the Cadets’ fourth straight title in its sixth final in seven years.
