Before we get to a busy day of huge games on getaway Friday of Memorial Day Weekend, here’s a recap, in case you weren’t with us on Twitter @LaxLessons.com or @Joe_Lombardi of one of the more eventful Section 1 (NY) final round tripleheaders we’ve seen.

The winners advance to the Saturday, May 30 state quarterfinals at Lakeland High School in Shrub Oak, NY against the Section 2/Section 9 first-round winners.

Class A: Mamaroneck 12, Mahopac 11, F/OT. Eric Greenberg’s sixth goal of the game won it OT for the Tigers, who took their third title last four years.

Class B: Yorktown 11, John Jay 9. The Huskers won their fifth straight sectional title and 38th overall as Billy Strassman scored four goals.

It was a spirited effort for John Jay, which lost to Yorktown 15-8 and 11-2 in the regular season.

Class C: Pleasantville 9, Bronxville 7. The Panthers defeated the four-time sectional and defending state champion Broncos in winning their first-ever state title.

Siena-bound 2016 D Jack Drillock held Henry Grass, leading all-time scorer in Section 1 history, scoreless, and netted the eventual game-winner with his long pole, making it 7-6 early in the fourth quarter.

Josh Della Puca had three goals and two assists for the Panthers, including his 100th career goal. Teammate Brian Reda had three goals.

On Long Island, there was a big upset in the Suffolk semifinals as Sayville beat Shoreham-Wading River on a game-winning goal by Ashton Bradley. Sayville will meet Mount Sinai for the title Wednesday at Stony Brook.

IMG_3431Kennedy Catholic (left) won the CHSAA City A title in dramatic fashion, 8-7 vs. Monsignor Farrell on Gerard Martirano’s game-winning goal with three seconds remaining.
