jferriso2It has been a sad start to the new year in the lacrosse community.

We told you, with heavy hearts, Friday about the tragic death of St. Lawrence University senior lacrosse player Garrett Gagne, who died early Thursday morning after he was struck by a police vehicle in Chatham (MA), while laying in an unlit road according to reports.

The Boston Globe is reporting the 22-year-old Gagne, a native of Longmeadow (MA), was “seriously impaired by drugs and alcohol.”

Today, another young college lacrosse player died suddenly.

jferriso4Joe Ferriso  (pictured above and at left), a sophomore defenseman at Hofstra, passed away at age 19 from injuries suffered in a car accident.

Ferriso, who lived in Copiague, is a 2013 graduate of Kellenberg High School on Long Island, where he was also a soccer standout.

His father, Al, is director of campus operations at Hofstra, and sister, Amy, played at Hofstra from 2004-08.

Joe was majoring in Mechnical Engineering at Hofstra. A Boy Scout who earned the rank of Eagle Scout, he also enjoyed snowboarding and surfing. For his Eagle Scout project, he constructed a 19-foot by 5-foot wooden deck, railing and stairs at the Youth Council Building in Copiague.

Visitation will be on Wednesday and Thursday from 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at D’Andrea Brothers Funeral Home at 99 Oak Street in Copiague.

The funeral mass will be held 11 a.m. Friday at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Assumption Church at 1 Molloy Street in Copiague.
