CJ Battaglia is from a sports-minded family. His father, Chris, is the head football coach at 2013 state champ Aquinas Institute in Rochester.

But lacrosse is the sport the 2018 longstick midfielder for Webster Thomas HS near Rochester (NY) will be playing at the next level.

Screen Shot 2014-11-08 at 12.02.12 PMHe’ll be playing it at Penn State, a decision first reported when it was made by Joe Lombardi on LaxLessons.com’s Lacrosse Insider premium coverage section.

The 5-foot-10, 150-pound Battaglia, a righty, is an outstanding athlete with good speed and strength. He plays travel for SweetLax and participated in Adrenaline Platium Cup, Big 4, Crab Feast and SweetLax Invitational.

Now, here’s a Q&A with CJ on his commitment.

What were the main factors in your decision?
Penn State is known as a great academic school, so that is what 1st attracted me to it.

When I met (Penn State Head) Coach (Jeff) Tambroni, I knew immediately he was the type of coach I wanted to play for.

After meeting the players and watching there grueling workout, I could really see that there path to being successful was through hard work and that’s the same path I take.

What other schools were you considering and what others did you visit?
Cornell, Syracuse and Michigan.

What are you strengths as a player and how would you describe your style of play?
I believe I am a real good defensive player utilizing my footwork and speed. I like to hustle and do things that others may not like to do.

Screen Shot 2014-11-08 at 11.19.15 PMWhat areas do you need to work on?
I need to work on playing with a long stick because I have only played with it for the last three months.

How did you get introduced to lacrosse and what other sports do you play?
Coach Rocky Delfino of Roberts Wesleyan got me to play Lacrosse when I was in 5th grade. I also play Football and Basketball.

Any final thoughts and are there any people you want to thank for helping you reach this point?
I’d like to thank my mother and father for supporting me, Penfield’s youth coaches and Sweetlax Coaches Kevin Martin, Mark Thering, Anthony Pezzimenti and Billy Lombardi.

I would also like to thank Webster Thomas head coach Rob Ruller and assistant coach Jason Jobson.

  1. John says:

Penn State is not a great academic school; kid probably picked it because thats what his grades allowed considering he doesn’t know how to spell “their.”
