Screen Shot 2014-10-20 at 11.46.12 AMOne of the Hudson Valley’s best players of all time and top varsity coaches will have a new program to call home.

Brian Kuczma, who guided Putnam Valley’s boys varsity program since its inception 15 years ago, will be leaving Putnam Valley to take over the varsity program at Wappingers.

Kuczma will continue to be a full-time teacher at Putnam Valley.

“I left solely based on a family decision,” Kuczma said. “My son will be playing in the Wappingers program in a few years and I wanted help develop it to make sure he has the same opportunities in the future that I had at Yorktown.”

Kuczma was an All-America defenseman at Yorktown and Johns Hopkins and an MLL all-star, who retired from the MLL in 2009. Kuczma is the head of the Section 1 lacrosse coaches association.

As a varsity coach, he turned Put Valley into a Section 1 Class title contender since the program’s inception and numerous sectional title appearances and three Section 1 titles (in 2004 and back-to-back in 2009 and ’10). He is eagerly awaiting his new challenge.

“It will also allow me to spend some more time with my family as they are getting older,” Kuczma said. “The Putnam Valley community has been great over the last 15 years and that was a tough part of the decision, but what I believe to be the right decision.

“It will be a challenge developing the Wappingers program, but I am looking forward to the benefits that will come with some extra family time.”
