Lew Janavey’s six-year run as head coach of the varsity lacrosse program at Somers High School in New York’s Westchester County has ended.

Janavey has mutually parted ways with the Tuskers after a successful tenure. He is exploring new opportunities for next year.

“It was a good run,” Janavey said. “I was originally thinking about staying one more year and making it a transition year, but that didn’t work out. I wish Somers the best.”

It was also the first head-coaching job for Janavey, a longtime familiar face on sidelines throughout the Hudson Valley.

Janavey became the fifth head coach in the now 18-year history of Somers’ varsity program in October 2008. (John DeVito, Tim Schurr, Jim Donohue and Bill Woolard were the others.)

Somers has started its search for a new head coach.

In his first year as head coach, in 2009, Somers won the Section 1 Class B title, defeating John Jay in the final, led by a senior by the name of JoJo Marasco. Marasco, of course, now stars in the MLL after a highlight-filled career at Syracuse in which he was a Tewaaraton finalist. The Tuskers made two other sectional finals under Javaey — in 2010 and 2013, both ending with losses to John Jay by the identical 9-6 score.

Janavey picked up 80 wins in his six seasons despite the fact that Somers significantly upgraded its schedule, facing such highly regarded tristate powers as St. Anthony’s (NY), Cold Spring Harbor (NY), Niskyuna (NY), Bridgewater-Raritan (NJ), New Canaan (CT), Iona Prep (NY), Fordham Prep (NY) and Ridgefield (CT), in addition to its tradition Section 1 rivals Yorktown, John Jay, Lakeland/Panas and Mahopac.

In addition, Janavey launched a preseason event at Somers in his first season in 2009, the Red Gray Preseason Shootout, that attracted top teams from throughout the tristate.

Janavey, who was a goaltender at Lakeland High School, was an assistant coach at his alma mater from 1990 to 2004.

  1. Gurk says:

Just another case of loosing a very good coach. The administration there should be the one that is reorganized. The athletic dept has now let go or forced out a lot of passionate, talented, good people. Hope Lew does what Dennis D, Tim Schurr etc did. Go to places where they have done better and have finally ben supported and appreciated. Another loss for Somers.

  2. Quakers says:

Greeleys Vin Degregorio named Somers new Lax coach. Interesting turn?
