John F. Kennedy Catholic in Somers, N.Y., is making a big splash in its first season in the CHSAA, riding an eight-game win streak.

The Gaels picked up a 16-8 win over St. Mary’s of Long Island on Monday to improve to 9-4.

Gerard Martirano had five goals and five assists and Paul Magnesio had five goals and two assists for the Gaels. Will Martirano added three goals and two assists and Connor Maile two goals and two assists. Ryan Podlovits had a goal and two assists and also won 14 faceoffs.

“Our kids played great and really came to play,” said Kennedy Catholic co-head coach Nick Savastano, who guides the Gaels along with his brother, Vin. “I give our guys a lot of  credit for following the game plan perfectly and getting up big.”

Prior to their arrival at Kennedy Catholic in 2010, the Savastanos coached at neighboring John Jay and led the Indians to the 2007 state final after defeating unbeaten Huntington in the state semis.

Nick Savastano described this year’s Gaels’ team as one of the most improved he’s coached and Gerard Martirano, who is also a hockey standout, as one of the top midfielders he’s had during his entire coaching tenure.
