High School Scoreboard Central, Wednesday, 4/2

It was a day in which defending champions went head-to-head.

In New York’s Section 1 on Wednesday, defending Class B champion Yorktown built a six-goal, second-half lead but had to hold off a late run for a 13-10 win over defending Class C titlist Bronxville.

Also in the Empire State, in the CHSAA, defending AAA champion Chaminade pulled away for a 10-4 win over previously unbeaten defending AA titlist Fordham Prep.

In a noteworthy Section 1 vs. Ivy League battle, Briarcliff rallied to beat Hackley 9-8.

Ridge beat Moorestown 11-6 in a big New Jersey game.

In the prep ranks, St. Augustine (NJ) beat Penn Charter (PA) 6-5 and Trinity-Pawling (NY) beat Loomis Chaffee (CT) 10-8.

The game of the day in New Jersey features a pair of 2-1 squads as Chatham visits Mountain Lakes. Chatham is coming off a double OT win over Summit. Game-time is 4 p.m.

Also in the Garden State, an undermanned Don Bosco Prep team will have it hands full against visiting IMG National (FL), whose two losses in seven games have come against prep powers Lawrenceville (NJ) and Hanover (PA). Game-time is 4:15 p.m.

It will be a battle of the old guard vs. the new guard as longtime Suffolk (NY) Class A power West Islip, dethroned last season after a run of nine straight county crowns, takes on a Smithtown West team that’s ranked No. 1 in the LaxLessons Tristate Top 25, the best and first rankings released each week. Game-time is 5 p.m. at Smithtown West.

Defending Suffolk — and New York state champion, for that matter — Ward Melville faces a big test when it hosts Northport at 4:30 p.m.

In the CHSAA, Iona Prep, off to a strong start, visits Archbishop Stepinac.

There are two big games in the Hudson Valley featuring sectional title contenders. Lakeland/Panas hosts Brewster at 4:30 p.m. in a matchup of teams coming off tough losses. John Jay hosts Rye at 5 p.m.

In the prep rankings, Ontario’s Hill Academy visits a Brunswick (Conn.) team highly touted in some circles, but off to a 1-2 start. Hill is 5-1.
