If was quite a Wednesday in the nation’s No. 1 hotspot for lacrosse, the New York/New Jersey/Connecticut tristate region.

Among the highlights:

* The New Jersey season started as Delbarton outlasted Seton Hall Prep 10-9 in the teams’ rematch of their postseason clash won by SHP and Bergen Catholic beat Glen Ridge.

* Hauppauge and coach Jim Konen beat Long Island (N.Y.) power West Islip for the first time in school history.

* Defending New York Class A state champion Ward Melville’s first-year coach Jay Negus picked up his first win.

* Hicksville dealt Nassau County (N.Y.) rival Locust Valley its first loss.

Before we get to today’s schedule, we look ahead to Saturday. That’s when John Jay and Yorktown play in the unofficial regular-season game of the year in New York’s Hudson Valley.

LL2014HSGAMEDAYToday, both teams open their regular seasons.

John Jay, which will be looking to make the sectional finals for the 11th straight season, faces a big test in Game 1 against Arlington. Game-time is 5:15 p.m. at AHS.

Yorktown starts its quest for a seventh state title against a Putnam Valley team coached by former Husker (and Hopkins) All-America defender Brian Kuczma. Opening faceoff is 4:30 p.m. at Put Valley.

Also in Section 1, in a matchup of two of the top programs in a busy day of action in the Hudson Valley, Hendrick Hudson visits Lakeland/Panas at 4:30 p.m. at Lakeland HS.

Among Long Island games, Half Hollow Hills East visits Connetquot and Port Washington visits Long Beach.

A light day in New Jersey includes Wayne Hills at Pascack Valley and Pingry at Moorestown.

    Will be interesting to see what changes there are in John Jay’s offense after reading about the coaching change in the preview for Saturday on the Insider section.
