Giants coach Tom Coughlin addresses Iona Prep players at the Quest Diagnostics Training Facility in East Rutherford, N.J., as Iona Prep coach Rick Trizano, right, looks on.
For New Rochelle, N.Y.-based Iona Prep, the scheduled start of practice earlier this week wound up being a perfect storm of problems.
“Due to the weather issues we all faced this year, the field conditions caused by the weather, and the fact that Iona Prep has a brand new turf field, it made it impossible to plow our practice field,” Iona Prep coach Rick Trizano said. “Instead of practicing in the gym, we resorted to practicing on the tennis courts.”
But then, another more appealing alternative came about.
“The school has always had a close relationship with the New York Giants organization, and we had the opportunity to utilize the Quest Diagnostics Training Facility (in East Rutherford, N.J.),” Trizano said.
But there’s more. Namely, a surprise visitor – Giants head coach Tom Coughlin.
“We were all surprised that Coach Coughlin was able to stop by and talk to the troops,” Trizano said. “He delivered a strong message about the impact and lasting strength of team accomplishments and how any individual accomplishments pale in comparison. We were all very fortunate.”
