Cal Costa’s introduction to lacrosse came when he was a fifth-grader.

“One of my friends gave me a lacrosse stick and invited me to practice with his team,” said Costa, who is now a sophomore at the Bishops School in San Diego, Calif. “I fell in love with the game at that practice and the rest is history.”

A big chapter in that history has just been written.

Joe Lombardi reported on LaxLessons.com’s Lacrosse Insider expanded coverage section that the attackman has verbally committed to Ohio State University.

The 5-foot-10,  150-pound righty is an unselfish player who loves to feed teammates, but can also dodge and shoot.

“I pride myself on playing the game I believe it was intended to be played,” he said.

You can watch his highlight reel here.

recruiting_updateNow, here’s a Q&A with Cal on his decision.

What were the main factors in your decision?
Ohio State had everything I was looking for. The academics at Ohio State are outstanding. They have one of the top business schools in the nation with the Fisher College of Business.

Lacrosse wise, Ohio State is and will be among the top colleges in Division I lacrosse for time to come.

Also, I really admired the coaching staff in (Head) Coach (Nick) Meyers, (Assistant Coach Dave) Dobbins and (Assistant) Coach (Jamison) K (Koesterer), who broke down what it means to be a Buckeye and expressed their philosophies and goals.

The facilities at Ohio State are second to none and it was really cool to be a part of a school with such renowned athletics. Lastly I loved the traditions of Ohio State and alumni base that will be there for me after graduation.

What other schools were you considering and what schools did you visit?
I also considered Penn State, Notre Dame, Harvard, Denver and Maryland. I visited Penn State, Notre Dame and Denver.

What area of your game do you need to work on?
Like anybody, your off hand is always a priority and needs to be developed. Other than that, just continuing to refine my skills everywhere. Anything and everything you do can always get better.

What travel team do you play on what showcase events did you participate in?
I play for West Coast Starz and I attended Adrenaline’s Blackcard Showcase, Sonoma Shootout and Showcase, NSCLA, Terrapin Classic, High Rollers and the U15 National Championships with the FCA national team.

Any final thoughts?
I would first like to thank my parents, who stood with me every step of the way and helped me with my decision.

I would like to thank Jono Zissi, Hamilton Pollard and Steve Sepeta for helping me through the recruting process. I would not be anywhere near where I am today without them.

I would also like to thank the coaches at Ohio State for giving me this opportunity.
