Andrew Helmer will be going from Summit to Syracuse.

The Class of 2015 standout, one of the top defensemen in New Jersey, verballed committed  to the Orange.

The 6-foot-2, 175-pound Helmer, who is also a football standout, earned a starting job for Summit’s lax team this past spring, earning all-county second-team honors, and finishing the season with 49 groundballs and 14 forced turnovers. He then performed well at several summer showcases, including MVP.

Helmer, a righty who has strong stick skills, is a tenacious on-ball defender with the ability to push the ball in transition.

You can watch his highlight reel here.

Recruiting abstractNow, here’s a Q&A with Andrew on his commitment.

What were the main factors in your decision?
What drew me to Syracuse University was a rich tradition of both academics and lacrosse. Many of my relatives are Syracuse alumni and always have spoken highly and fondly of the time they spent there. After meeting with (Syracuse Associate Head) Coach (Lelan) Rogers he really sold me on the family aspect of the program and a extremely involved alumni network.

Overall, the outstanding combination of both academics and athletics at Syracuse University was too much to pass up on.

What other schools were you considering and what schools did you visit?
I was considering Notre Dame, Marist, Loyola and Holy Cross. I visited all of them.

How did you get introduced to lacrosse and what other sports have you played?
My older brother, Mike, who I have always looked up to, played in high school and really got me interested.  I play wide reciever for football in the fall.

What travel team do you play on what showcase events did you participate in?
I played for Summit Futures and Steps All-Stars this summer.  I also was an all-star at Top 205.

Any final thoughts?
I would like to thank my coaches, Jim Davidson, Kyle Kirst and John Alpizar for all the support they have given me. I would also like to thank my parents Mike and Lori.
