It takes just over five minutes to travel from Sachem North High School to Stony Brook University.

It’s a short trip for sure, but for many Flaming Arrows’ players, it has become the final destination on the long road to Division I lacrosse.

Most recently, Anthony Ross.

The rising senior defender’s commitment was first reported when it was made on July 24 by Joe Lombardi on LaxLessons.com’s “Lacrosse Insider” section.

Ross’ path to D-I is quite a story. He did not start playing lax until eighth grade. He is a strong and athletic player with good quickness. He’s also a football standout for the Flaming Arrows as a running back/linebacker.

“He’s a stud athlete,” Sachem North coach Jason Mauro said of the 5-foot-10, 195-pound Ross. “He has a great motor and is a great kid.”

Ross is the third Sachem North Class of 2014 player to commit to Stony Brook, joining faceoff specialist Mike Calvagna and midfielder Joe Caridi.

“It was a factor in my decision because I’m good friends with both of them and I feel comfortable playing alongside them,” Ross aid.

Ross marks the sixth Class of 2014 commit for Seawolves coach Jim Nagle, who played on Ward Melville’s 24-0 1988 state-title winning team.

Now, here’s a Q&A with Anthony on his decision.

What were the main factors in your decision?
Academics. Also, I have a good feeling for (Stony Brook) Coach (Jim) Nagle and the lacrosse program at Stony Brook.

 What other schools were you considering and what schools did you visit?
Other schools that I considered were St. Joseph’s, Limestone and NYIT.

What are your strengths as a player and how would you describe your style of play?
Athleticism , strength, quickness and my ability to be coached.

How did you get introduced to lacrosse and what other sports have you played?
I got introduced in the eighth grade when all of my friends were playing. I also am a three-year starter on the varsity football team.

What travel team do you play on what showcase events did you participate in?
I played with Sachem North in the summer and I went to Blue Chip 225 camp and many summer tournaments.

Any final thoughts?
I would to thank all of my lacrosse coaches that have taught me how to play the game, especially Coach Mauro with all of his help in the recruiting process.
