It’s been three weeks since the 2013 high school season ended, but national champion Ward Melville just picked up a first.

The Patriots got their first verbal commitment from a player in the Class of 2015 earlier tonight when rising junior defenseman Tom Reilly committed to the admissions process at Cornell University, as first reported at Twitter.com/Joe_Lombardi.

Reilly was one of seven sophomores on the roster for the unbeaten New York Class A state champions.

Reilly is an athletic player with good speed and foot work.

recruiting_updateNow, here’s a Q&A with Tom on his commitment.

What were the main factors in your decision?
Getting a great education as well as a highly competitive lacrosse program.

What other schools were you considering and what schools did you visit?
I was considering Georgetown, Harvard, Yale and Brown. I only had the chance to visit Brown.

What are your strengths as a player and how would you describe your style of play?
My strengths are  my speed, athleticism and ability to move my feet. I would describe my style of play as aggressive, under control and a team player.

What area of your game do you need to work on?
I need to work on my off hand and communication on the field.

How did you get introduced to lacrosse and what other sports have you played?
I got introduced to lacrosse through (Ward Melville classmate) Daniel Bucaro in sixth grade after I quit travel baseball. I also play football and basketball.

What travel team did you play on last summer and what showcase events did you participate in?
I played on the Ward Melville Patriot Elite travel team. I participated in the Suffolk vs. Nassau Long Island Showcase and the Philly Showcase all-star team.
